Activist, zinester, all-around trouble maker

That's me, redguard (aka greg butterfield). After years of wishing I could do a zine, I finally started one -- Absent Cause, which came out in July. Currently I'm working on the second issue of AC and my comic book, Red Army Comix.

I'm a long-time radical activist and journalist, father of a boisterous 3 year old grrrl, and survivor of an abusive childhood and adult relationships. I'm also a goth and someone who struggles with body image issues. I treasure the connections I've been making with the wonderful community of zinesters!

New issue of Absent Cause coming soon -- submit by Sept. 1

It’s almost that time again…

September 1 is the deadline for submissions for the third fun-filled issue of Absent Cause: Death, Dying and Undeath. The new issue will be available in October to welcome the season of growing darkness, decay and Halloween / Samhain / Day of the Dead.

Absent Cause #3 will feature a stunning wrap-around cover by Brandi Lee, centerfold poster art by Disdane, interviews galore, essays, poetry, fiction and artwork as we explore death from many angles.

On Loving 'Dracula': a 24-hour zine

Here's the cover and a sample page of my 24-Hour Zine Thing creation, On Loving 'Dracula.' I created it on my birthday, July 16. It includes an essay on the 1931 film directed by Tod Browning and starring Bela Lugosi, quotes from the movie, recommendations for further reading, and many posters and images from the film. It's 24 pages, 1/2 size, black and white.
