Cheaptoys.

----------------------------------------------------✂-----------------------------------------------------------

Hi, I go by Giz and write the perzine Cheaptoys

Cheaptoys was started in 2009 in the French Riviera, to write down the stories of punk there. Since then, I travelled with the zine and published issues in Bloomington, Indiana, Melbourne & Montréal. Originally published entirely in french, issues since #4 have been written partly in french and partly in english, making it only accessible entirely to people using both languages, or committed enough to translate it.

Topics have included many reflexions on punk and anarchism, personnal narratives, punk band stories, travel mishaps, and a growing interest for radical libraries. Most of the issues are still printed and distributed by the punk label Bus Stop Press, in south-east france, and come in a A6/quarter sized italian format.

As of july 2014, 15 issues and three half issues were published. The ones in print are #6, 7, 11, 13, 14 & 15. 2€ postage paid worldwide from Bus Stop Press, but it might take some time. You can also get it from Fight Boredom in Montréal; Sticky Institute in Melbourne; Take Care in Sydney; le Syndrome de Galilée in Toulouse; Boxcar Books in Bloomington; IN Quimby's in Chicago and Portland button Works in Portland, OR.

Just to make sure, Cheaptoys is a text-heavy bilingual zine, french & english and parts aren't each other's translations. It is usually 50-50 but I guess the latest review in maximum rock'n'roll is true : "to get it all, you got to either read the two languages or like google translation a lot."

I've researched zines for quite some time, which became my master's thesis which I still didn't got time to work on and translate into english. I now live in Montreal, Québec. There, I'm a student at the library school and try to keep up with such rad projects as DIRA (montréal's anarchist library) and Open Doors Books (a book to prisonners program), and an unauthorised vegan soup kitchen on campus. I'm also doing a lot of studies as a lab rat and trying to learn new skills. I write for other zines too, and play in the band COPY SCAMS.

My favorite zines are by my friends, but for the rest, I'm up for trade for zines I would want to read. it includes topics such as anarchism, libraries and librarians, radical communities, punk, criticisms of punk & counter-culture, traveling stories, DIY research in social sciences & history, non-monogamous relationships, lab-rats, language (and especially want to read about non-binary ways to speak in latin languages), indigenous solidarity, anti-gentrification, living as an expatriate, queering "heterosexuality", experimentations with music, and surviving the winter. There's probably more. I do not want to read unsolicited poetry (well, ok, I kinda want to read the new cometbus issue), and I do not want to look-at contentless artsy zines.

I also do a blog to put pictures, and monthly reviews of stuff. there.

Hey Giz! Thanks for letting me know. I'm glad the letter and zine made it to you, at least! I hope you're doing well. I'm glad to be back in touch with you, I'd let too much time pass. I wasn't in a ziney frame of mind for a few months there but I'm feeling it again. :) It's nice. Warm wishes, hope you're very well.

ok, here are some reviews, by Amber of Fight Boredom/Culture Slut

Cheaptoys #4

Although the majority of this issue is written in French, Gizmo has used a few pages to practice his English. As it happens, I use his zine to practice my French. This issue is mostly typewritten and laid out cut and paste style. Giz writes about being vegan in France, which is a rarity, and cooking vegan meals for local show-goers. This made me happy because I actually just went to a show last week… Continue

Awesome evening in Aix-en-provence

I already wrote few pages in Cheaptoys #2 about la Fanzinothèque birthday party, and a lot of people could count it better than me, but last week-end was really awesome, and not so far away (from me !). Mort-né fanzine from Aix (south of france) put out an event with all the artist from the zines, in the Baba's bar.

Even if I think that, most all the people were not zinesters, or maybe don't really now what a zine is (who does ?) It was a really… Continue
