Paramount pictures tried to sue the US navy over the name USS Enterprise?

Well, this does have to do with licensing and how crazy the studios can get, which all media zine editors have had to deal with.  I heard the following story from a fan dealer many years ago. …Continue

is there a legal definition of a fanzine?

Have there been any court decisions that define what is and isn't a fanzine?  I do a media fanzine.  There's a copyright Nazi who has stated he will prosecute those who try to "commercially exploit"…Continue

Paramount pictures tried to sue the US navy over the name USS Enterprise?

Well, this does have to do with licensing and how crazy the studios can get, which all media zine editors have had to deal with.  I heard the following story from a fan dealer many years ago.  Someone suggested it might have come from a book by Harlan Ellison.  There is absolutely nothing about it on the web.  Can anyone give me any info as to either its source or its veracity? Here isthe story: This began at a Star Trek convention.  A fan was selling patches for the Navy ship the USS…See More

Have there been any court decisions that define what is and isn't a fanzine?  I do a media fanzine.  There's a copyright Nazi who has stated he will prosecute those who try to "commercially exploit" works on a specific TV show.  Hw has also stated that he will not prosecute fanzines. If there's no specific legal status, what would all of you mark as the border between a fanzine and a non-fanzine?See More

PDF file conversion fun

I use a very old DTP program, CompuWorks Publisher 3.  I use Express PDF Printer to convert the page files to PDFs. What I don't get is that the results are never consistent.  For instance, one book cover I did has a lot of images added to it.  When I view it in its original DTP form, it looks fine.  Converted to PDF, you can see all sorts of white lines where the art was added.  But the odd thing is that that is not consistent: I can convert the same file again, and the lines are either much…See More

Licensing issues

I'm wondering if anyone doing a media zine has ever had to deal with licensing issues.  I know that if you want to do a book about, say, a TV show, and don't want to go through the bother of getting permission that you can make x% of the book have content other than from that TV show, and it would be OK.  Does anyone know the specifics of this?I know that one company, New Media, issued unlicensed books about TV shows etc.all the time and they never seemed to have any problems.See More

ANY decent bookstore distributors out there?

I work on what I guess you could call part books/part fanzines. My latest work was doing the cover of The Alpha Control Reference manual for Alpha Control Press. For years Diamond Distribution was my distributor. But over the years, as they destroyed the competition, their rules became more and more ridiculous. Lately, hey have frozen small press publishers out entirely by instituting a "benchmark" requirement: your book/zine must have sales of $2500 miimum; anything less and they just cancel…See More
