About Me

I co-founded & co-organize the community-minded Trees & Hills Comics Group of VT, NH, & west MA and the positive adult-oriented Offshore Comix, and have co-edited all the anthologies for both to date. I publish my own humor, nonfiction, & other comics in my zine Square Dance and a series of little freebies called Zero (which I reformat & reprint in Square Dance). And where would I be without my website colintedford.com?

Thirsty for comics? WATER is here!

Posted on June 13, 2011 at 8:30am 0 Comments

The new Trees & Hills anthology WATER debuted at MECAF a couple weeks ago, and now you can buy it online from our shop! You can see its hand-printed cover to the right there, looking cool in the Ashuelot River.

WATER contains 56 pages about the Connecticut River, the Weeks Act, the Lake Champlain monster, a sad lamprey, the Nahr El Kalb Valley in Lebanon, Jenny Greenteeth, childhood summers at Laurel Lake, communities fighting water-bottling corporations, and more! Includes the last comics of Mark “Sparky” Whitcomb with an appreciation by Stephen R. Bissette. 10% of all proceeds go to the…

Layout mixup

Posted on May 5, 2011 at 10:30pm 3 Comments

I just printed up Zero #6 (a 1/4-size 8-pager, the free version of a strip in Square Dance #5). The first print I did, one of the pages was pixelated, so I replaced it & reprinted. Then I noticed other pages had some digital-looking issues (I do my layout on the computer), realized they were all images I'd rotated so the zine would fold right, and fixed those (by using an actual command that rotates it a specific amount instead of eyeballing it by hand). I printed & assembled the whole batch (just 30), then realized I'd accidentally replaced one of the pages with a copy of another. I'd done a test print but was only checking image quality because I'd "already" checked the layout. ARGH!

Well, at least I noticed it before giving them out.

Surprises from Headville

Posted on April 30, 2011 at 8:39pm 0 Comments

I draw this strip, or these strips called Headville (so far Winter & Spring (don't click Spring if you're in the Mini-Zine Swap!)), and last night on a whim I Googled "Headville". I guess I thought the only results would be mine, but it turns out there are other things with that name.

As far as I can tell it doesn't exist anymore, but apparently there was a place called Headville in Vermont, as evidenced by the postmark on this postcard. There's also Headville Grain & Feed in Kansas (not Headville, KS, though). The business info site identifies itself as "a D&B Company",…

Colin Tedford replied to Emma Stronach's discussion What's the best program to use when making a zine?
"I use Scribus for layouts. It's free and open-source, though not super user-friendly. I used to use Serif PagePlus, which is not free (at least I remember eventually having to pay to get some feature I wanted -- maybe PDF export) but is…"

Colin Tedford replied to Ravenhood's discussion How to align a double-sided mini zine for print??
"Is your scanning program set to the right paper size? Maybe it's set to A4 instead of letter or vice-versa. Scanning software also often gives the option to adjust the size with a crop box. If you scanned them as image files you could also crop…"

Colin Tedford commented on COPY THAT PRESS's group FREE ZINES FOR THE PEOPLE
"Yes - there are plenty of good pragmatic and philosophical reasons to give zines away, but it is also just fun!"

Colin Tedford commented on COPY THAT PRESS's group FREE ZINES FOR THE PEOPLE
"Cheyenne: I don't think that's true in any meaningful way. A free zine will probably have more readers who don't value it highly, but that's because it'll probably have more readers in total than if you charged for it - the…"

Colin Tedford commented on Erica S.'s group Minicomix!
"I used Mini-Comics Day to get a jump on my Halloween comic, and am well-pleased with the result! Click images to enlarge: What happens next?! Don’t worry, I’ll post it…eventually. Muahahaha!!! (If you can't read the words…"
