Zines are just like any form of art.  When a creator's MAIN GOAL is to profit, the product usually seems disingenuous, to me at least.  This is why mainstream media, be it magazines, music, movies, etc, tend to bore me.  I'm not upset that people put out these things, they just don't interest me.

I don't feel there is anything at all wrong from profiting off of zine creation.  More power to you.  As Andy Warhol said, "Art is what you can get away with."  If you can sell zines at $10 each, go for it.  From a retail mindset, you need some strategy.  Are you more likely to sell 10 zines at $10 each, or 100 zines at $1 each?  Somewhere in the middle?  How important is it to get back your financial investment?

I make zines no matter what.  Some sell, some don't.  I'll make them either way.  Any money I make is bonus, but I never expect it.  I've given out zines for free, and find that people respect them less and read them less, thinking that free=shitty.  (That being said, I just got Shards of Glass in your Eye #12 in the mail, and was super stoked!  Thanks Kari!)

Do your thing man.  If it's good, people will want it.

I get what you mean... a lot of money and time goes into it, and being told you shouldn't expect anything back is pretty ridiculous. I think people will always want to read alternative ideas and opinions, I guess? Maybe these days it's too easy to access free things, like writing and art and music online that asking for anything back seems weird to some people. I dunno, I get what you are saying though and it is hard to realize you just spent like $40 on making copies and you got back maybe half of that. But I do think zines are worth our time. I think the last couple zine fairs I went to people were marking them up to 4 or 5 bucks so I know they don't think they're worthless!

I give all of my zines away for free and don't mind not making a profit. The time I spend making zines is theraputic and creative and I see that as well spent. Also my goal is to raise awareness about important issues I see happening around me and I want other people to hear and see about them too. Many things are not shown in the main stream media in America. It is liberating to create your own media for the world to view. (:

Hahaha, "communist hobby center"! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. You're right, zine-making and distribution are a set of skills. I would make money off my zine if I could. I don't think that's a dirty idea at all. As the situation is (zines are definitely devalued outside of zining for some reason), I give my zine away a lot so I can share my writing with as many people as possible. And I do enjoy the gift economy of zine trading.
