Zine Exhibit at University of Washington Graduate Library

Yesterday I put up a month long exhibit in the lobby of the University of Washington Graduate Library (Suzzallo/Allen to locals). It was a bit tough aiming it at mostly people that might not know what a zine is as well as trying to add books to the collection about radical and zine cataloging encouraging librarians to collect zines in academic library collections (during March the ACRL conference, as well as the Zine Librarian Unconference, will be taking place in Seattle). It was also hard to narrow down my massive collection of zines to just a dozen or so for display. But I think it worked out pretty good. I did a poster explaining zine basics and history to newbies, as well as current resources (I definitely plugged We Make Zines):

And in the display I tried to do a mix of newer titles, some classics, local Seattle zines, and zine anthologies and books that people could find in the UW's collection:

And here's the exhibit as a whole below. You can see there is also a small collection of zine and small press related books pulled from the library collection and gathered here. I also got Microcosm to send up a big pile of catalogs, which I put on a stand for people to take. Approximately 800,000 people pass through this lobby in a given month, so the potential to expose tons of new people to zines here is great. I just hope I did such a massive subject and history justice with the limited amount of display space I had:

Thanks! Yeah Jenna, as soon as there was talk about the Zine Librarian Unconference happening in Seattle during the ACRL Convention, I reserved March on the exhibit calendar for zines. That was about six months ago, the timing was well-planned on my part. It's mainly for the general public, but I included resources in the collection about cataloging ephemera and the small-press in an effort to encourage librarians to consider adding zines to their academic library collections. They should at least consider adding some of the zine anthologies like the UW has done!
