Poem as History – Passionate Love Poem from French Writer Flaubert
HISTORY POEMS. Here’s a type of poem we don’t often consider – history poems.
***
This is my poem that is a’Love Letter from the Novelist, Flaubert to Louise – August 15, 1849′. An actual letter, translated and turned into a poem. The words in parenthesis are added and not original to the letter.
***
I will cover you with love when next I see you.
(I will cover you) with caresses, with ecstacy.
I want to gorge you with all joys of the flesh
so that you most certainly will faint and die.
I want you to be amazed and confess to yourself
that you had never even dreamt of such transports.
And when you are old I want you to recall
those few hours, and I want your dry bones
to quiver with joy!
