This is the day we shoot the action scene, and in this movie I start the scene dangling from a rope high over a gorge a mile underneath me. I ask the director, "Huh? I'm not really in any danger am I?" He says, "Someone THIS important, no way! You dangle in front of a screen, and we edit in the danger later." OK says I, let's do it. Wardrobe says "Cut! Buddy you can't wear that blue tie?" "Why not," asks I. "I like the fashion statement?" Well why not I ask you.

Blue screen (or even more often Green screen) is a blank screen behind the actor, that can be later filled in with background footage to fit the action. The blue tie would look like a hole in the actor if he was dangling in front of a blue screen. For more see
