a place for zinesters - writers and readers
On the second of August is Auckland Zinefest. This year will be a bit different to others because it's on a Thursday evening and will wrap up in about three hours, usually they are on Saturday and run for the entire day.
Every time I attend a zine fest I try to have a new magazine to giveaway and I do this by having my deadline just before Zinefest day. This year I am wanting to do something a bit different and have decided to put out a mix CD with zine booklet.
I am really looking forward to making the CD with cool bands I have featured in my Zine before and some new bands I have recently discovered. I want the CD to sound amazing and be professional which means getting it mastered which I don't really know much about.
I have have few decisions to make, I don't really like using press photos but I won't really have time to get shots of all the new bands. I also considered getting them illustrated (by someone else because I don't draw myself) but that can be time consuming and you don't know what it'll look like until the last minute. I guess I'd have the same problem with collage but I could do it myself. I also thought about having lyrics but band bios may be better since it's about discovering new music and learning a bit about them. Or I could work with a writer and get the info to be about the song they have on the album, more like mini interviews.
I'm hoping the CD won't cost a bomb to produce but the quotes I've had so far are very expensive. I have a meeting tomorrow to discuss what I want with Stebbing and if they could give me a deal since they would want to support the project.
Looking forward to seeing how this all turns out. I have eleven songs already, I don't mind if i don't get more because the more tracks the greater the cost, and I think eleven is just enough but I guess a few more wouldn't hurt.
I'm am new to this We Make Zines site. My website is presencemagazine.co.nz
Please let me know of any suggestions or hints on my upcoming project. I look forward to some feedback especially on what to do in the booklet insert zine or hand made bigger zine.
