We Make Zines

a place for zinesters - writers and readers

Okay. I hope this isn't inappropriate or bad netiquette or anything, but I tried to "message" Hibou, the Pen Pals group owner, but it said I had to "be friends" first. I know this sounds ridiculously antiquated and cranky, but I have a problem with the whole "friending" thing on the Net, because I feel it trivializes and automates the ancient and organic institution of "friendship". Please allow an old fossil his Victorian quirks.

Sooooo.....I'm contacting Hibou this way.

I thought of joining your group, but I'm so behind in my correspondence now, I'm hesitant to. But I run ads in my zines and on the Internet for prisoners. Would you, or any of your members, object if I posted THEIR pen pals ads on your group, after joining myself, of course. I post them on other sites, but like so much on the Net, they seem to be all but dead. I know different zinesters, like larger society, have different feelings about prinsers, and I respect that.

Please let me know.

Thanks,

JND

Thank you! Glad somebody understands.

Actually, dense me, I see I could have just left a comment in the "comment wall". But I suppose if I'd wanted to be "private" that option would still be out. But then there's little reason for me anyway to want my messages to be private when contacting zinesters about their zines.

Anyway, I don't mean this personally against Hibou or anything. She didn't design the site. I hope she gets back to me.

BTW, I also have a thing about joining new groups or anything, unless I'm really going to use them, many or most of which I don't. It feels like to much "cyber-clutter". But in order to read some, or contact somebody potentially interesting on them, you have join, get a password, etc. I realize it may seem like a petty peeve, but I've got such a backlog of unremembered usernames and forgotten passwords, it creates a lot of confusion for me down the line.

Ugh, unfortunately all of Ning is like that, I've found it annoying in the past as well. I just wanted you to know you're not alone, and it's not all "old fossils" that feel this way. I hate the whole "friending" thing. I've found it even here, somewhere I wouldn't expect it as much- people add me as a friend and then never talk to me! Makes me wonder what they're doing- collecting profiles? It seems strange to me.
