We Make Zines

a place for zinesters - writers and readers

Hello! A new season is upon us and, though I'm ridiculously cold, I couldn't be happier. I love fall. This last month has been harvesting from the garden, touring, being sick, and getting the house ready for some winter nesting. It's been tumultuous in its seeming calm. It's kind of hard to believe so much happened in such a short amount of time. But it did and it was (mostly) good and here we are at a new month, a new season, and a new newsletter. Hope you all are well and I would love to send you packages filled with things.

Garfield Nature Trail Versus the Motorcycles on Brawne St (Chapbook...- the latest from Olympia legend Craig Oare!
Graz- Bootleg Babylon (CD) ($10)- the newest sound-destroying release from Fkdp Records, Portland's finest label.
Hippie Watching in North America (Zine) ($3)- another one passed on from Fkdp. A joke field guide to the modern interpretations of being a hippie.
Race Revolt #5 (Zine) ($5)- brand new issue of this awesomely radical large-sized compilation zine from England.
Rad Dad #18 (Zine) ($3)- recommended to EVERYBODY! (not just the those with the kids). This zine is so good. I sing its praises.
Zine World (Zine/Magazine) ($4)- the best source for zine culture and the (very) underground press around.

DIY Guide to Drums (Book w/ CD) ($15)
DIY or Don't We? Number Two (Zine) ($3)- this month's feature!
Friends of Polly (Zine) ($3)
Hyena in Petticoats: A Mary Wollstonecraft Zine (Zine) ($4)
Newish Jewish (Zine) ($2)
Polka Dot Dot Dot- Love Letter to New Zealand (CD) ($12)
Race Revolt: A Collection (Zine) ($5)
Rad Dad #13 (Zine) ($3)
Rad Dad #17 (Zine) ($3)
Radical Mycology (Zine) ($5)- it's fall. get into the woods.

Eleanor Murray- Little Warrior (off Little Warrior)- she'll be releasing her brand new album this month (which is amazing), so just thought I'd remind everyone how great she is.
Grass Widow- Shadow- been listening to them a ton in the last month. This is Lily Maring from Yes Please's band and their first full length just got released on Kill Rock Stars a couple weeks ago. Definitely a band that deserves some support.
Graz- Total Request Mashup (off Bootleg Babyon)- the danceable destruction of pop music.
Poppet- Future Fantastic! (off Well I Don't See Why Not Vol Two)- i just keep hearing about how much people love this song, so, for those of you who don't yet have the last Well I Don't See Why Not, here's something people love from it.

*For those in or near Olympia, we will be helping host a season-changing themed event on October 15th. Music
by Takhoma, Maelstrom, Tapestry, and Dj Manikin, a puppet show by Spindleheart, warm drinks and good lighting. 9pm, free/donation, The Alamingo 1705 Prospect Ave NE Olympia, Wa 98506.
*The Olympia Timberland Library has so many good events coming up. Among those: (Tuesday, October 12, 8:30) Sara Marcus will be talking about her new book "Girls to the Front: the True Story of the Riot Grrrl Revolution" with an OOG riotgrrrl panel and Blood Bones performing; (Thursday, Oct 21st at 7:30) Erick Lyle will be promoting his new SCAM zine anthology; & (Saturday, October 23rd, 7pm) the 2nd annual SciFiFest with authors Ted Chiang and Nancy Kress, a scifi trivia contest, music from Spiritual Successor (Zach Mandeville's new scifi band!) and Mutoid Men.
*Submission call! Amina Foxdye (Sugar and Heartstrings) is putting together a compilation zine about divorce. Want to be a part? Email her! aminafoxdye@gmail.com
*This month the long-awaited Destroy All Movies! book comes out. An "informative, hilarious and impossibly complete guide to every appearance of a punk (or new waver!) to hit the screen in the 20th Century" by former Olympians and All Freakin' Night founders Zach Carlson and Brian Connolly. Knowing them, it will certainly be amazing.
*The British blog The Devil Has the Best Tuna has taken a liking to the music we carry and, in the last couple weeks, has done fun write-ups on Graz, Foxdye, Gumar and his Magical Midi Band, and Marlo Eggplant.
*Mother Jones evidently has similar festival music choices as us, since they did a piece on Filastine and the Hobo Gobbelins being artists worth checking out at Burning Man.
*And lastly we'd like to wish luck and general happiness to Ms Valerie Park Distro helper (and all around awesome human) Rylie Thayer. She moved to Portland a couple weeks ago and her presence around the office has been greatly missed.
Until next month, JJ/MVP
