My Submission to Telling Secrets: A Body Image Postcard Project

The Topeka & Shawnee County (Kansas) Public Library's Sabatini Gallery is hosting an exhibit featuring photographs from the Book Girl Culture by Lauren Greenfield. The exhibit will run March 6 through April 17, 2009. Telling Secrets: A Body Image Postcard Project is part of the Girl Culture show.

I got one of the submission postcards at the Percolator gallery. (The Lawrence Percolator is the project space of the Lawrence Corporation for the Advancement of the Visual Arts. LCAVA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing new art and cultural events to audiences in Lawrence and Douglas County Kansas. Check it out at http://lawrence-percolator.blogspot.com/)

On the back of the card it says "Cover the words on the front of this postcard with your own pictures and ideas to describe your secret body image...Postcard submissions will be displayed with other entries, but your identity will remain anonymous." I guess my identity is not really anonymous, since the postcard shows my unique tattoo, and now I'm sharing the piece with any and everyone who reads this blog.

The photos were taken my by friend Ailecia Ruscin. The words are from a poem I wrote in January called "My Quirks."

I am pleased with the piece and really don't want to send it away, but I guess that's part of the process.
