a place for zinesters - writers and readers
The answer to, and winner (if any) for, our last contest question of:
This week's question is obscure, tough, and a lot of fun. Fantasy and Science Fiction magazine has been publishing since my birth year, 1949. It's the most widely read sci-fi magazine. In 1980 F&SF had a 30 year contest that went like this. Readers were asked to choose some science fiction concept that would be a reality by 2010, and win $2,010 for it. The magazine says that of the 2,700 entries, there were many suggesting such advances as world government or world peace, (yeah right!) colonies or factories in space (need the money down here - sadly) robots in the home, (auto vacuum-bot?), tourist travel in space (hard enough to get on an airline on earth), and the most frequent entry was medical advances that would allow us to live to be 200 (not when we get the Dr. bill! Can't even get universal health care for the short lived people we got!). OK enough fortune telling from those who didn't win. The winner was Allen MacNeill, who at first, thought the contest was another African King Inheritance Online Hoax! But finally saw it was real, remembered entering, and got the prize.
Finally our art question, our 500th one BTW - what did Allen see in 1980, coming to pass in our era, that won him the contest prize?
Hand held computers.
We had no correct eligible answers. Seems y'all lost your connection on this one. I don’t dumb down, so please wise up!

FINE PRINT: The CD prize is only available to those with mailing addresses in the US. Foreign winners will have to settle for the miniscule fame alone, and the satisfaction of a job well done. But don’t forget you can listen to all the music on the website, whether you won or lost – and I’d be glad if you did!
The 1966 sci-fi film, 'Fahrenheit 451", is all about the Firemen, who instead of stopping fires, seek out all books ( that author Bradbury thought burned at 451 degrees) and burn them to help control information. The art question is this, there are only 2 words printed in the film (that aren't on the covers of the books that are shown). What are they?
