First Quizzical of This Year
The answer to, and winner (if any) for, our last contest question of:
This week’s quiz question is ‘name that novel – we’ll know the author right away -’ and solve your love life while you’re at it. This quote is a conversation where boy X is telling about his love woes to girl “Y”. And her response ( which is so simple and good that it fits just about anyone in love). For extra credit, not only name the novel but the characters talking. Here goes:
“Do you want to be a gentleman to spite her or to gain her over,” ___ quietly asked me, after a pause.
“I don’t know,” I moodily answered.
“Because if it is to spite her, ” ___ pursued, “I should think – but you know best – that might be better and more independently done by caring nothing for her words. And it if is to gain her over, I should think – but you know best – she was not worth gaining over.”
Great Expectations (Charles Dickens) Biddy is talking to Pip. I had no correct answers.
Seems my expectations on this one are not that great and far from… E-Stella-r! I don’t dumb down so please wise up.

FINE PRINT: The CD prize is only available to those with mailing addresses in the US. Foreign winners will have to settle for the miniscule fame alone, and the satisfaction of a job well done. But don’t forget you can listen to all the music on the website, whether you won or lost – and I’d be glad if you did!
