a place for zinesters - writers and readers
Things are really motoring along now, and everyone’s really excited. We’ve had masses of interest and positive feedback and some of the most incredible contributions from all over the world. We’ve had a lot of questions too, so we’ve put a little Question and Answer thing together so everything you need to know about us is in one place.
What’s Kerouac’s Dog?
Kerouac’s Dog® is a fully independent quarterly that will form a bold and exciting platform for new writing, design, photography, fashion and creativity in general. It’s an opportunity for established and aspiring Creatives of all disciplines, from all over the world to exhibit their work to a global audience. It’s a place to be published and be seen, in a publication that will not exist in any other format, online or otherwise.
Where did it come from?
It’s inspired by Jack Kerouac and the 1950s Beat generation and in honour of these, will eagerly exhibit the newest and bravest work and folios, from creatives all over the world. All tied up with key themes of freedom; truth; beauty; love; travel; wanderlust; sex; taboo; and fringe.
What will it look like?
Well you’ll have to wait and see, but we will say that the whole thing will be beautifully designed and printed top-to-bottom in black and white – because we have a passion for that.
What’s in it?
Fashion, photography, writing, opinion, fiction, erotica, graphic design, illustration, graffiti and so much more.
Can I submit work?
Sure, there’s still room in the first Issue. ‘Freedom’ but when all 96 pages of that are full, then we’ll be looking for submissions for the next issue. As the whole thing is in black and white, the only stipulation is that the stuff you send needs to be in – or look gorgeous in - monochrome. It can be old work, or new work, we don’t mind. We won’t be able to pay you, but we’re happy to put names and URLs with each submission used so please send these through, along with your work. In the subject line, please put KDM followed by your name and creative discipline. Remember all image and graphics need to be at least 300dpi. All contributors own the rights to their work after our first use of it (if it’s been created specially for Kerouac’s Dog). They can then do whatever they wish with it after that.
Why feel good about submitting work?
Well firstly, because all us creative folk, whatever our strengths, are enthusiasts. Whether we do what we do for a living, for the love of it, or both, we’re doing it because we’re passionate people; because we want to make an impact; a dent in the universe. And because we believe getting great stuff out there will affect the people who do pay us to do the stuff we do best.
Secondly, because getting stuff in print; in something real and tangible in a digital age is incredibly exciting. Getting seen in something you can thumb through, rather than click-through, scroll through or touchpad-flick through, something that you can have on your coffee table, and return to, is still an incredibly beautiful thing, and it still means something. It’s evocative, resonant and it stays with you.
And finally, because Kerouac’s Dog is going out to a global audience of creative people, all of whom share your passion; and many of whom are movers-and-shakers in the industry. It’s more than a magazine; it’s a philosophy; an initiative; a collective, and a community. Its content will never go online in magazine form – and won’t exist in any other format.
When is the first issue released?
To coincide with the 41st Anniversary of Kerouac’s death in 1969, the first ever edition of Kerouac’s Dog will be launched in September 2010 as a prestigious Limited Edition print run of just 69. Each will be individually numbered, and include a specially-designed A2 poster. There will be no online version, and when they’re gone, they’re gone. We won’t be doing reprints of this issue in the future. Ever. It really is a chance to own the ‘first step’ in what will not just be a long-lasting journey, but an adventure of a lifetime.
