Escape from the Mainland outlines through writing and illustrations my experiences on the White Reef Islands, a small island reef 38 km off the Bay of Plenty/Eastland peninsula, where I spent four weeks with the local community gaining inspiration for (what I plan to be) ongoing art projects in multi media. I have made illustrations of the reef along with a 2800 word description of my time there, there is also an A3 fold/pull out map (pictured here, also).
I like the zine quite a lot, but the photocopier has lame settings that make the format of the master a bit different to the copies. Oh well, nothing that can be done. The illustrations are handmade, no computer. It was quite a complicated process involving paper, brush pens, duo tone, acetate, house paint, many arguments with the photocopier. It looks good so it was all worth it.
