SUBMISSIONS WANTED FOR NEW ISSUE OF ENCHANTED TIMES
When it began 2 years ago, Enchanted Times was basically a vehicle invented to carry 3 revisionist fairy tale short stories/flash fiction I had already written. I had no idea at the time that it would become my only ongoing project (amidst many other one-offs); but there have now been 3 issues (#1 & #2 now condensed into an omnibus edition) plus 5 mini-zine supplements, and there is definitely more to come!
The first 2 issues were written entirely by me, but for ET#3 I was able to include some original artwork and 2 features by guest artists. I would love to include a couple of supplementary features by guests for ET#4 (due for printing sometime in the first half of next year).
HOW TO MAKE A SUBMISSION:
Please read the details below then send me a message with a brief outline of your idea & approx. word count or size (as relevant). I will reply & ask for further info/full text if I think it is something I can work with.
TYPE OF PIECE:
I'm looking for short spots/gap-fillers. This is a broad commission which could include:
The main stories tend to err on the darker or melancholic side, so the extra bits are designed to provide contrast. ET#3, for example, included a letter from the Magical Objects Restoration Society regarding a runaway gingerbread man, and witness statements from the story of Red Riding Hood. Enchanted Times is presented like a newspaper, so almost any style of feature will be considered. All pieces submitted must be entirely your own, original work.
I'm mostly looking for short pieces & snippets, but I realise short is non-specific. I don't know yet exactly what spaces I will have to fill. Full pages might be available, and if your idea/submission is too long but too amazing to turn down, I might ask if I can save it for ET#5, instead...
The main stories currently planned (subject to change) for ET#4 are based around The Steadfast Tin Soldier, Rumpelstiltskin, the Emperor's New Clothes and the Nightingale. Ideas branching off from these stories would be great, but pieces based on other stories are also welcome for submission. I usually use vintage/copyright-free illustrations, but some original artwork would also be greatly appreciated.
WHAT IF IT HAS BEEN PUBLISHED BEFORE?
So long as we will not be in breach of any copyright laws, I'm still interested! Just let me know if & when your piece has previously been released, whether online, or in a zine/print publication.
Please note, I am only looking for pieces based on traditional fairy tales (eg Brothers Grimm/Andersen/Perrault) - not fairies, not Disneyfied/cute versions, and not original stories in a fairy tale style (unless incorporating a character or obvious motif from a traditional tale). Your version may of course be lighthearted/tongue in cheek/modernised in any way you like. See www.surlalunefairytales.com for originals to inspire you!
I can't pay for submissions, but can provide you with a couple of copies of the finished zine as a thank you for your contribution (which you can keep/sell/trade, as you prefer). Quantity of contributor copies will be dependent on individual contributions and agreed case by case.
