We Make Zines

a place for zinesters - writers and readers

by MIKE TWOHIG {printed in Art Bureau 8}

A\V began as the "All-Purpose Room," an exhibition and performance space founded by musicians Heather Gardner, Lynn Hileman and Kevin McFarland, and visual artist Jack Zazlo. The original space opened its doors on May 23, 2003 with a mission to present the best innovative art and music in Rochester, New York. Now known as A\V, the space continues to host a wide variety of shows featuring multimedia installations, paintings, photography and live music. Since the space was founded, the A\V staff has changed and expanded from four to eight members. During the summer of 2004, A\V held an art raffle in conjunction with a two-day gallery event put on by an art collective called "Synaesthesia." I donated two paintings and shortly thereafter was asked to join the group.

Membership to A\V is by invitation only. Members do pay a fee, which is an equally divided percentage of rent and operational costs. Membership benefits include keys to the space and curatorial designation, where one can book the space to hold art shows, music performances, etc. Responsibilities include attending monthly meetings and helping at events.

A\V is in the midst of applying for nonprofit status, but currently revenue is gained through donations at the door, admission costs for certain events and a minimal commission taken from sold artwork during A\V-membership shows. Any A\V member can use the space on a first-come, first-serve basis by reserving dates on the online calendar. Someone with absolutely no affiliation with A\V, or its members, can rent the space for $75 a week, $25 each additional artist, by contacting A\V at 585-423-0320 and scheduling a time. There is no commission on non-membership events. Art shows include an opening reception and run for an average of two or three weeks. All events are submitted to the listings of local papers and occasionally get special write-ups. Events are promoted with flyers and/or postcards sent to the A\V mailing list. Check out A\V’s Web site for more information at avspace.org

Mike Twohig is a member and co-curator of the art and music space A\V. Those of you in the Rochester, New York area are encouraged to visit the art gallery, concert hall, and computer music studio space. Check out their calendar of events.
