We Make Zines

a place for zinesters - writers and readers

by MATT W. MOORE {printed in Art Bureau 14}

Wallspankers was created in April of 2006. It had been an idea of mine for years, but I wasn’t sure how to turn it into a reality. I saw the project as a printed zine on sticker paper and being able to distribute it around the world. My community of friends within the art, design and graffiti circle, is constantly growing. I want to spread their work as far as I can. There is no shortage of talent. These are the type of people that get shit done. Walkers, not talkers. DIY sticker heads, cutting-edge designers, witty wordsmiths and esoteric visual architects. The perfect community. The only problem was funding a very expensive run of sticker zines.

In the past, I was printing b/w crack-and-peel stickers with great success and minimal expenses. A grip of 100 sheets goes for between ten and fifteen bucks. That’s like a penny or two per sticker. One day while I was taking advantage of one of the photocopy machines that I frequent, it dawned on me—if I produce it, others will too.

The theory behind Wallspankers is very simple—artists create work for stickers. Artists can upload their work at a printable resolution to my server, and anyone, anywhere in the world can easily download it for free and print it on sticker paper. Thus, the downloaders can share the work of hundreds of artists from all over the world within their home city. I curate the ready-to-print PDF zine four times a year and artists can submit at anytime. I also have established an extensive artist profiles section on the site, documenting other works by the artists in each of the quarterly e-zines. There is also a graffiti gallery that serves as an ever-evolving archive traditional graffiti work. Most of the graffiti on Wallspankers was done by Maine writers. Before WS they were hardly represented in cyber-space.

There are some righteous books and magazines about street art and graffiti, and there are definitely some great Web portals, but they rarely offer the opportunity for people to take part. Participation is key! Wallspankers is my attempt to organize a community of artists that not only love art and design, but also have the drive to go out there and share it with their city. Spanking up a hundred or so stickers in one night, and meandering around your city can be such a great adventure. Exploring your city and finding the work of incredible talents from all over the globe is a blast too. I mean, imagine walking one city block in some podunk town and seeing stickers from dozens of different countries—crazy, right?

Wallspankers is always accepting submissions for upcoming issues. Contribution guidelines can be viewed at the site. Keep opening the right doors. Learn the rules and respect them. Keep slapping up stickers. None of this would have been possible without peoples’ support and sticker contributions.
Stay good. Stay up,
