We Make Zines

a place for zinesters - writers and readers

Hi, my name is Gabriel, I'm from France and I'm here in the United States for six months as an international student in San Francisco. I'm currently doing research on zines: I study communication in France and I'm writting a 60 pages thesis about zines and alternative medias in the American underground culture.

I would like to get in contact with zinesters to interview them for my research. If you are or used to be a zinester and are willing to help, get in touch with me! The interview will be composed of about fifteen zine-related questions. Some might seem a little stupid but my audience will be some French university professors who have never heard about zines/DIY/punk rock and all that so I have to be as pedegogical and educational as possible.

Ps:  This is a serious project.I try to bring a little exposition to the zine culture into the French University System. French intellectuals in general are interested when radical politics is involved in a subject=) Please, don't be effraid of being misrepresented!

Hope to hear from you soon!

Gabriel

Gabriel,

You didn't hurt my feelings at all.  I was just commenting about my past expreinces with being interviewed.  I was also just putting in my 2 cents worth about the concept "zines", and by implication, the elitism, trendiness and narrowmindedness that's always pervaded it, especially in the ast 10 years.

Of course you're free to ignore it.  You might want to take a look at Wikipedia, which'll lead to a lot of good primary sources.

Good luck!

Hi James,

Thank you for your comment. As I said in my first post, i'm doing this research to learn more about zines myself, and I understand that they are more than just underground publications related to the punk rock scene. I'm kinda new to the whole zine thing so I'm sorry if some of the things I said seem irrelevant or not true. I guess I still have a lot to learn=) I didn't wanted to hurt your feelings or anything with my post.

Wishing you a nice day,

Gabriel

I don't know how many times I've put in the time and effort to answer interviews and never heard from the interviewer/researcher again.
Zines as I knew them were about far, far, FAR more than DIY/Punk/underground. But then I'm wondering if what I've been doing the last 20 years were ever zines at all. Maybe I've never been cool enough to be a zinester. That's okay, I've got some satisfaction out of what I have been doing, whatever it's been.
