Absent Cause zine was established in 2008 as a venue for people from myriad cultures and selves, pushed to the outskirts and into the underground, to find each other, draw connections between their experiences, and gain strength for their struggles.
The term “Dangerous Gifts” is usually associated with the special contributions of people with mental illness / variance. But there are many kinds of dangerous gifts we experience and share: the person who chooses to wear…

As the editor of Absent Cause zine, I want to invite my fellow zinesters to join in this important protest and boycott of Arizona's racist, anti-immigrant law SB1070. Please consider adding your name to the list of endorsers and voicing your opposition to the law in the next issue of your zine.

Full of Crow is an excellent new online literary magazine of poetry, fiction, art and reviews, created by Lynn Alexander and Aleathia Drehmer. Lynn also runs the very cool social networking site
The Sphere. I'm really proud to have my zines discussed on Full of Crow.

Here's the cover and a sample page of my 24-Hour Zine Thing creation,
On Loving 'Dracula.' I created it on my birthday, July 16. It includes an essay on the 1931 film directed by Tod Browning and starring Bela Lugosi, quotes from the movie, recommendations for further reading, and many posters and images from the film. It's 24 pages, 1/2 size, black and white.
This was the first time I've done a cut-and-paste zine. It was lots of fun! If you have a day to devote to being…

Mentally Ill zine #2
More comix about my struggles with depression, PTSD, abuse, marriage and fatherhood, recovery and struggling to reclaim a sense of self. It’s cartoony but not light hearted. There is lots of potentially triggering stuff here. Consider yourself warned.

On April 25 my daughters and I attended
Kids’ Comic Con 2009 at Bronx Community College. We were invited by Mike Weiss, whose daughter Jessica is co-producer of PB&J Comics and a fixture at East Coast zine fests.
This was a really interesting event. For one thing, I haunt some key NYC comic stores regularly, and never heard a thing about this (it was the third annual con). I’m not sure how it was built, but the turnout…

On Friday, April 24, I received a letter of rejection from the Texas Department of "Corrections" for
Absent Cause #2. Copies of the zine had been requested by four prisoners on death row in Huntsville.
The reason given is "Publication contains sexually explicit images" on pages 45 and 49. These are the painting "Tofu's Kiss" by Toni Lynn Crane and the photograph "It's What's Inside" by Heidi Calvert, featuring model Sash Suicide. Both are provocative explorations of women's…

ABSENT-CAUSE
#1, $3, 8½” x 11”, copied, 44 pgs.
By Keith Rosson
Wednesday, November 19 @ 00:00:00 CST
First issue of a zine with heavy nods to goth culture, body image, and surviving sexual abuse. A pretty mixed bag with tons of interviews and loads of contributors, visually and otherwise. On one hand, there’s a fascinating interview with a young pro-Palestinian female activist that was really captivating, as well as one with Jessica Mills of MRR and Less Than…

From Maximum Rock ‘n’ Roll #307, December 2008
MENTALLY ILL / $1
5.5 x 8.25 – copied – 8 pgs.
This is a quick, jab-to-the-gut of a zine – a hand-drawn siren from a politically minded father/husband/writer who suffers from deep pockets of depression. Mentally Ill is a glimpse into Greg’s mind in a few short pages of erratically-drawn comics – some drawn so faintly it’s like he couldn’t muster getting the pen to the page. (CH)

The deadline for submissions to Absent Cause #2 is December 1.
Duality is the theme -- doppelgangers, mirrors, shadows, doubles, our bodies and our body-images, twins, split or multiple personalities, mental illness/dangerous gifts, bisexuality, gender swapping and gender play, immigrants living in a foreign culture, interracial identity, etc. But don't feel bound by this if you want to contribute ... there are no hard and fast rules.
Then new issue will be published in…
