CRIES FROM THE GULAG
Number 3, June, 2017
James N. Dawson, Publisher
P.O. Box 950
Spokane, WA 99210
Prisons have many rules about what a prisoner can get in the mail, too many to list here. Generally, stickers and metal clasp envelopes are not allowed. Keep mailings simple---just your letter and/or your zine---to increase the chance it won't get returned. Anything too extreme---e.g., violence, porn....may get rejected. I hope you'll find a few people to…

I do street feedings once a week and have a literature box with material from many different philosophies. I'm having a hard time scraping up things for it. I do this under The Vegan Libertarian Benevolent Society:
I would be interested in any zines anybody here would be able to send me. Zines by…Continue

I ordered a Scream Factory ages ago (or maybe got it gratis, for review), the 1995/96 issue. At first I wasn't impressed when I read it, but it sort of grew on me, and I now think it was pretty exceptional.
I'd like to get and/or at least borrow the whole collection, but I don't want it bad enough to pay the $15 a copy it's going for on eBay.
Does anybody on WMZ have the whole collection? Does anybody know if a zine library does? Would anybody be willing to do a trade. …Continue

As some of you know, I'm sort of involved in the prisoner zine scene(not exactly sure how that developed, but that's another issue...) and I'd like to order a few zines for a prisoner pen pal I've had for many years.
So as the title above indicates I'm looking for dark, paranormal, unsolved mysteries, strange, hard/punk rock, poetry zines with lots of imagery. Probably not politics or technical at least as the main content. I'd recommend something dense, that can last a prisoner a…Continue

A couple weeks ago I ordered a couple inkjet cartridges from an Amazon.com seller. They e-mailed the estimated arrival time of July 11, then July 16. By Saturday it hadn't come, so I thought I'd better see what's going on. As usual, it took some scrutiny to find out what links led to the tracking. There was no link to it on the shipping confirmation page like other companies I shop with. I had to guess by clicking on other links until it led me to tracking.
When I looked at the…Continue
Somebody by the name of Gene Hawkridge sent me an invitation to join LinkedIn, which he himself is on. At first, I thought it may have been some kind of spam, so I hit the reply button and politely told him I didn't remember ever "meeting" him. Later, the name began sounding more familiar, and after an Inbox search, I did find he was a WA LP member and had contacted me in a mass e-mail a while back. So, taking it as a possibly friendly personal gesture, I decided I'd go ahead and accepted…Continue
From Chris Loy:
"There's one more think I 'd like to ask, maybe you can give me some tips & advice. I use to own my own body piercing shop back home in Las Vegas, it was called---"Vlad the Impaler". Talk about some great times James?!! The money was incredible. I actually got to travel all over the world. I've been in magazines (Tattoo & Savage) and have pierced thousands of people---including some pretty famous people. I've got advice & storys that I think…Continue
Thanks very much for the great meal yesterday.
I've hesitated to do this, but I'd like just to make a few comments on your local FNB and my involvement with it.
I had the sense that my attempts at a face-to-face inquiry about FNB met with some discomfort from some members, so I thought it might go over better in writing. We libertarians tend to be rather blunt and direct in our discussions, and maybe I came across as overbearing. If so, my…

I'm very interested in the process of co-optation and conventionalization in radical subcultures and intellectual, social and political movements. I'm curious what members of the subcultures/practices below might have to say about these sites.
And, I'm just bored.

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate place to make a post like this, but i want to record it somewhere. I had a similar experience a few years ago I recorded on eHealthforum.com, and was going to do it there, but apparently my last post dropped off their "archive", so I decided to do it here. I've "whined" about it on Vegan Fitness Forum often enough, that I thought I'd better not bug them about it anymore.
Last night I had one of the worst bouts of "burning, aching, numbness" in…Continue
There were a couple one-panel cartoons in the Seth Friedman Factsheet 5's called "Flicker Snickers". They were sort of parodies of old 60's/70's-era newspaper cartoons, but brutally grim. I've been thinking of appropriating them in a zine, but I thought (climate of opinion being what it is these days) that maybe I should ask the creator if he minded. I've looked on Google and found a lot of "flicker snicker" references, but none seem to be to the cartoons or its creator I'm looking for. …Continue

An hour or so again I sent Fate magazine a (belated) e-mail in response to their Sept.-Oct. 2010 issue. It was at firstname.lastname@example.org. About 15 minutes ago I got a "Maeler-Daemon" failure notice saying they couldn't deliver it. I've got the magazine right in front of me and I can't see a single letter out of place.
So I went to their website, www.fatemag.com, to see if they had a more up-to-date e-mail…Continue

I e-mailed Joe Smith, publisher of the Aardvark and owner of Manual Publishing blog, November, 2009:
I wrote the following comment on your blog entry, November, about library closings. I tried to enter it in the comments text box, but there was this scroll down menu I was supposed select something from that I didn't understand. I tried various choices, but it kept saying I got it wrong in red. Not complaining, just…
