What Laura-Marie Says about My Zines

Here are the comments that Laura-Marie wrote about my zines in Erik and Laura-Marie Magazine #45: A Poem a Day by Chantel is a zine of poems that Chantel wrote in January. Reading them gives me the sense of a life. Candy Box: An Adventure in Sweets from the UK by Chantel is a review zine of candy from the UK. Included are photocopies of the candy wrappers, and she rates each candy on wrapper, visual appeal, and taste, with bonus points for being easy to share or save some… Continue

Review of Adult Themes

Here's the review of my zine Adult Themes that recently appeared on the Book Spew site (http://bookspewreview.wordpress.com/zines/) Adult Themes Oh what a relief to read XXX rated work that isn’t packed full of “romantic” words, all wrapped up neatly for dumb readers. Chantel G. is such a wonderful writer. She has a fabulous writing style that really makes you want to read on. From her sex dreams, to her poetry and her stories are all packed with in-depth details of her s… Continue

24 Hour Zine All Done!

It's 4:25 in the afternoon in Lawrence, KS. I just stapled the last of my 24 Hour Zine zines. Called Open Book, this new zine turned out well. I am pleased with it. It's not perfect, but I've never seen a zine that was. I met my goals of #1 simply completing the zine in 24 hours (or less) #2 making it more visually stimulating than past zines and #3 writing more honestly. It includes 38 things about me (and a shout out to Eunice for the idea), writing about why I live in Lawrence, KS,… Continue

Writing and Layout COMPLETE!

Whew! It's 12:40 in the afternoon, and I have just finished all the writing and layout of my zine. Yippee! I was not feeling so great when I got up this morning, but I stuck it out, had some food, got excited about zine making again. I think I'm going take a quick shower then look at the bus schedule. I don't have access to a car today, so I have to find out when I can catch the bus with my bike and go to the copy store. I am going to have it completed by 6pm, I know it! Continue

Good Morning Zine

It's just about 8:15. I do NOT feel like being awake and out of bed, but here I am dedicated to making my 24 Hour Zine happen. I don't think I have any caffeine in the house. Drats! I don't know how I am going to stay awake and typing, but i am determined. It's been an awfully long time since the old lady I have become has stayed up basically night and then tried to be creative/artistic on just a few hours of sleep. Wish I didn't have to work around the schedule of the copy shop (which closes a… Continue

5am update

Well, it's not quite 5am, but "4:45 update" didn't make for such a great title. i can't believe I am still awake. I can barely keep my eyes open, much less type. I am beginning to have those lack of sleep hallucinations, so I think think I should go lie down for a while, maybe sleep a bit. The name of the zine is Open Book, by the way, and I have 17 pages written and laid out. Only five more pages to go. I have no idea what I will write about, but I am sure I will think of something aft… Continue

Still at This Zine Thing

It's 12:18 am my time, and I've been at it for six hours. Wow! I've mostly been writing, a few images inserted in the body of the document. I've got 18 pages written, including the front and back covers. Oh, that means I only have to write six more pages, probably less than that, since I want to include more images. Oh wow! It's raining here. That's so unusual for this time of year. Usually by July we are in the drought season. I guess I didn't have to take 15 minutes earlier tonight to run ou… Continue

I'm about to start!

I'm about to start my 24 hour zine. I'm going to start at 6pm, in six minutes! I have my dinner ready to go, and I'm going to eat while I work on the cover. Oh yeah! Continue

My 24 Hour Zine Experience starts tonight!

I am so ready to make my 24 hour zine. I am all coffeed up, and let me tell you, I only drink coffee about twice a year. I will be awake all frickin' night! As soon as I get off work at 5pm, I am going to bike home really fast, cook and eat up some dinner, then settle in for writing, cutting, pasting, and creating. I'll keep everyone posted! Continue

Best Zine Tip EVER!

In Stolen Sharpie Revolution 2, Alex Wrekk suggests printing on sticker paper. Once you're ready to lay out your writing, you just peel the backing off the sticker paper and stick it to your page. I just tried it for a page I am making for Jenny Archibald's artist zine, and it TOTALLY WORKED! Not only did it work, it was AWESOME! I didn't have to whip out my (almost empty) glue stick, and now I don't have excess glue on my hands, computer keyboard, and workspace. I am so pleased! Thank y… Continue

Short review of Candy Box

Here's a review of my zine Candy Box that Madrea Marie is going to include in her zine: Chantels friend from the UK sent her a box full of UK candies. Chantel then decides to document her candy eating adventure. She rates each kind of candy and describes its taste, texture, and appearance. A nice added touch is the candy wrappers throughout the pages. It is a very cute little zine, and made me want to eat some chocolate! Continue

Adult Themes is DONE!

I just finished doing layout for Adult Themes, and I am super excited about the cover! I am also excited about my writing in the zine, although by the time it was all done, I really needed synonyms for moan, clit, cunt, cock, and rub. I am in awe of sex writers who can come up with unique descriptions for sexual body parts and actions. I ended up resorting to using "prick" and "dick", two words I'm not all that fond of. In any case, the zine is all laid out. Within the hour, I plan to g… Continue

What Folks Are Saying About Mistaken for Straight

I've been getting positive feedback about Mistaken for Straight. It's really gratifying when people say nice things about my writing and zines. This is what my friend Dixie (an awesome cool poet, witch, teacher, mentor, and all around rad woman) wrote to me in an email: I really like your new 'zine. I think it is one of your very strongest and best thus far. I was impressed by your courage and by the amount of objectivity you displayed in describing your experiences. I thought you balan… Continue

Review of Brainscan #23

(This review originally appeared on the Feminist Review blog http://feministreview.blogspot.com/2009/06/brainscan-23.html) This second printing of Brainscan #23 was released in September 2008, but don’t worry about it being outdated. While the events in this zine happened between 1995 and 2003, none of Alex Wrekk’s narratives has an expiration date. Wrekk’s travel-themed vignettes are entertaining stories, told the way a friend would talk about the wild things that have happened to he… Continue

Coming Soon: Adult Themes

I finished my Mistaken for Straight zine today (haven't even sent out all the copies I have promised to people), and I'm ready to start on my next project, Adult Themes. I am organizing a reading for July 25. Four other woman writers and I are going to read hot, hot stories (and poems) on a hot, hot night. (I can't imagine it not being hot, hot in July in Kansas.) I thought it would be awesome to put together a zine of my sexy stories and poems to sell at the event. I am going to call it… Continue

Mistaken for Straight is ready to go!

Whew! I took my zine down to the copy shop and made a bunch of copies. I felt good! Then, just about the time the last page slid out of the copier, I realized my post office box number on the "contact me" page was one digit off. NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! Oh well. As I worked my shift at the grassroots art space I am involved with, I just crossed out the wrong number and wrote in the right number. The zine is not perfect. Welcome to Chantel land. Anyway, as I reread the last bits I wrote, I found a cou… Continue

Mistaken for Straight is DONE!

I just now (June 6, 2009 7:56 am) finished laying out my new zine, Mistaken for Straight! Yippee! I am quite excited. For a minute, I thought I would never get out of my writing rut and finish it. I will go to the copy shop this morning and print it out. It has 33 pages and is 5 1/2 x 8 1/2. I am asking $2 a copy, and I will for sure take trades. (I love trades.) Here's a description from the front cover: "Contemplation on identity, sexual orientation, bisexuality, queerness, gender… Continue

Queer invisibility zine stalled

I thought the zine was finished and just needed to be laid out. Then I got home and realized that I wasn't happy with the ending. Now I am trying to write an ending, and I am STUCK. I think I need to move the computer out of the messy office. I think I need to sit down and write before I go to work, as I seem too tired after work. Endings are hard. Beginnings and middles aren't always easy either. Continue

Review of Crimsonheart Ring

This review first appeared on the Feminist Review website ( http://feministreview.blogspot.com/search?q=Chantel+Guidry) (Sadly, I lost the ring before this review was even published. I just hope the person who found it loves it as much as I did.) I found another beautiful piece of jewelry on Etsy. I was looking at member profiles on We Make Zines and found a link to a fellow zinester’s Etsy shop. I like seeing cool things other imaginative folks have made, so I decided to take a look at what… Continue

Queer Zine Archive Project

Do folks know about the Queer Zine Archive Project? I just discovered it. I plan to spend some time (when I have some time) exploring the QZAP website. Here's the web address: http://www.qzap.org/v5/index.php Here's some info about the QZAP: The Queer Zine Archive Project (QZAP) was first launched in November 2003 in an effort to preserve queer zines and make them available to other queers, researchers, historians, punks, and anyone else who has an interest DIY publishing and underground quee… Continue
