excerpt from When The Crash Meets Something Solid issue #010 : Strip It To The Bone

NOVEMBER 2012

UNTITLED

Begin here.  I set my thermostat to 82 degrees, and listen to my daughter breathe at night.

It is an odd thing to miss you.  The stillness that I feel inside myself has a quality that I cannot name.  Now it’s bitter.  Now it’s sweet.  The taste is all iron and cardamom deep inside my mouth.

It’s been a strange year.

All summer long, I drank and drank.  And drank.  Thirsty Thursdays on the Blue Ox…

excerpt from When The Crash Meets Something Solid issue #010 : Strip It To The Bone

UNTITLED
SEPT 2012

this house smells like old coffee
and something else-
some cross between dirty
women's underwear
and dinners i let burn
... before i threw away.
i am rarely there; i leave
the windows open all day
everyday.  walk through the door.
vanish into bed each night.

My year in zines: 2012

2012 was a ridiculously active zine year for me. It started with creating the StolenSharpieRevolution.org site to be a companion to my book. The site includes a Zine Event listing calendar. In February I attended the first L.A. Zine fest and it was great! In March I attended the …

The Q: What Does Fashion Do For You? (And Responses from Last Week)

This week, I have been talking a lot about feminism and fashion and the way that personal meets political through your self-expression. Now it's your turn to speak:

What does fashion do for you? What messages do you share with the world (consciously or unconsciously) when you put on clothes/makeup/accessories?…

Caught My Eye: TED Talk on The Uniform Project

The Uniform Project is truly where fashion meets activism. It is an interesting project in that it took the deceptively simple challenge of wearing one black dress every day for a year and made it a metaphor that people could invest in - bringing kids the money they needed to go to school.…

Science Fiction Stories: The Observer (Part II)

Today I am sharing part two of The Observer, my serial science fiction story. Two weeks ago, I introduced Taligunge, the alien observer who comes to Earth, and in this second part, she continues on just that journey.

If you haven't read part one, I highly recommend you check it out right here. And, as always, feel free to let me know what…

Caught My Eye: Dear Sugar Column at The Rumpus

As I was trying to rouse myself from a literary stupor this week, I searched around the internet for some inspiration to fill myself up until I could no longer stand the feeling of not writing. One of the articles that I came across that most inspired me was The Rumpus' column…

Sun Zoom Spark zine - issue 1 sampler online

Hullo, We Make Zines.

In the mid 90s a few pals and I ran a zine from where we lived in the Scottish Borders, named Sun Zoom Spark (after a Captain Beefheart song). We ended up getting it distributed throughout the uk. It was full of absurdist humour, trashy artwork and photography, bizarre stories, stuff about female sexuality + interviews with old time punkers like The Ramones & Jonathan Richman, the up 'n' coming Brit… Continue

The Machine of Ephemeral Thoughts - In zine format

The Machine of Ephemeral Thoughts - In zine format

You know, I've become really interested in the idea that, in general, the ultimate destination for art is documentation in a book or video. To start the ball rolling in my own practice I decided to convert the Machine… Continue

starters

I love starting things. I am a chronic beginner. Mostly this is restricted to my reading materials - I'd say at least 50% of the books on my shelf are half finished, or just started, or even almost entirely read but for some reason discarded a few chapters from the end. Zines are pretty great because the time it takes to read them is usually shorter than the time it takes for me to get sick of reading them or become interested in something else. It's a symptom of my generation: me and all the… Continue

My very first Zine Fair.

I have now been delging into the new world of zine-making for a good couple of months now, but my very first Zine Fair was the Wollongong City Gallery Zine Fair, held last weekend in the Grand Legal Ballroom..er, room of Wollongong Art Gallery.

It is very possible that the room that the Zine Fair was held in is not called The Grand Legal Ballroom room...but it should be. It has very nice polished wooden floors, suitable for some good ol' pointed toes, and then strangely it has some… Continue

MIXTAPE ZINE ISSUE 8 HAS LANDED

The new issue of Mixtape has hit my letterbox and excited me just a little too much. I've stuck it up on my Online Store for all you shoppers out there..........

"This is a beautifully crafted zine. Since its humble beginnings, Mixtape has grown from strength to strength. What began as an exciting project between two crafty females from Melbourne has become a very professionally printed, full colour zine that is still all about DIY and a strong love of art.

Issue 8… Continue
