"Where Are You From?" (Race vs. National Identity)

I went through many of my old posts this week to make my new About Me page, and was struck by The South Asian Question in a New York Minute, a post I wrote on the conflicts within South Asian American identity. In the year and a half since I wrote that post, I have found even more to say on the topic. In particular, I want to focus on the intersections and…

Newsletter for October!

Hello! A new season is upon us and, though I'm ridiculously cold, I couldn't be happier. I love fall. This last month has been harvesting from the garden, touring, being sick, and getting the house ready for some winter nesting. It's been tumultuous in its seeming calm. I will also… Continue

Also, they're gonna run a little one-page thing on Shotgun Seamstress in their July/August 2009 issue.

For those of you who've never heard of ColorLines:

ColorLines has been the national newsmagazine on race and

politics since 1998. We tell stories from… Continue

It's Reclamation Time!

This is from a questionnaire I had to answer from BOOKLYN Artists Alliance, a book art project in Brooklyn NY. I wrote the response last year, in February 2008. It's basically about why I bother to write my zine, Shotgun Seamstress.

Shotgun Seamstress is a zine for people more or less like myself: Black, queer,

feminist, artist, musician, outsider. It is a zine primarily for Black people who

do not fit into white people's stereotypes of what a Black person should be, and… Continue
