Musea E-mail Club #470 FAIR Quote

Dear Readers,

The media watchdog, FAIR.org (Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting) has the perfect sum up of my media concerns. It encapsulates everything I've been trying to say in a couple of paragraphs. I wanted to reprint it for you and I encourage you to check out their site for more. The media isn't tough on itself, but fair is tough on the media.

From FAIR website (fair.org)

"Independent, aggressive and critical media are essential to an informed democracy. But… Continue

Hazel Harper Issue #1

It is finished. I spent the entire weekend putting it together. Damn I feel like I accomplished something for a change. I'm already starting another issue... the writing part anyway. And I'm working on an 8 page mini that will be nothing but doodling. I may send it along with other stuff as an extra.

Report from Kids' Comic Con 2009

On April 25 my daughters and I attended Kids’ Comic Con 2009 at Bronx Community College. We were invited by Mike Weiss, whose daughter Jessica is co-producer of PB&J Comics and a fixture at East Coast zine fests.

This was a really interesting event. For one thing, I haunt some key NYC comic stores regularly, and never heard a thing about this (it was the third annual con). I’m not sure how it was built, but the turnout… Continue

Texas death row censors Absent Cause #2

On Friday, April 24, I received a letter of rejection from the Texas Department of "Corrections" for Absent Cause #2. Copies of the zine had been requested by four prisoners on death row in Huntsville.

The reason given is "Publication contains sexually explicit images" on pages 45 and 49. These are the painting "Tofu's Kiss" by Toni Lynn Crane and the photograph "It's What's Inside" by Heidi Calvert, featuring model Sash Suicide. Both are provocative explorations of women's… Continue

starters

I love starting things. I am a chronic beginner. Mostly this is restricted to my reading materials - I'd say at least 50% of the books on my shelf are half finished, or just started, or even almost entirely read but for some reason discarded a few chapters from the end. Zines are pretty great because the time it takes to read them is usually shorter than the time it takes for me to get sick of reading them or become interested in something else. It's a symptom of my generation: me and all the… Continue

Musea Art Contest 4/27/09

The answer to, and winner (if any) for,

our last contest question of:

This is a question that will give portrait artists or those that know anatomy a 'leg up'. Everyone knows how to draw the outline of an ear. But it's harder to draw the little 'Y" shaped cartilage within the outer ear. What's the name of this "Y" shaped cartilage?

IS

The anti helix - the helix is the ridge that surrounds the ear.

It seems all of you were… Continue

BETTER CONTACT INFO

Hi Everyone,

I have sort of fallen slack on my zine duties because I am now a program director full time at the Zootown Arts Community Center in Missula MT. http://www.zootownarts.com. I think by late summer I will be much more in the swing of zines again, but right now just spending a ton of time on fundraising and administrative things, plus teaching my class. Its great! But I don't check this place often , and I don't want to lose touch with this community. You are all more than… Continue

Getting my clawed toes wet around here...

Hey gang, I just did a mailing of my zines out to other horror magazines: Rue Morgue and Shallow Graves and the likes. If any of you have any suggestions for other horror mags you like that I may not know of, please chime in!

My other online stuff can be found at www.portlandhalloweenbazaar.com as well as www.myspace.com/spectaculadracula (I'm the Rose City Rudo in the top fiends).

Thanks again for you r time and your love of horror, zines and horror zines!

The Infinite ZINE!!

Whooooo hooooo!!! I can cross it off of my never-ending 'LIFE GOALS' list: I have published my first real zine. Ya - i've done lots of those dinky ones to fill the boring summer days: reporting on the town's birthdays, giving reviews of the latest movie-release...nothing that packs any zest - nothing of this caliber. The FIRST INFINITE ZINE was great - it was amazing - it was inspiring - it was even a little smudged from the Xerox… Continue

The PBS Series, "An American Family" which ran during Jan-March 1973

I went to a party celebrating the show at the Stoneleigh Hotel here in Dallas. I wrote a short story on the event. A couple of things stand out. Lance, the celebrated gay son was the hit of the party, and in the madness he mentioned that he liked my spanish style… Continue
