Mental Health Zines

I'm a member of this group for a good reason. All people, mental illness or no, deal with feelings of alienation, loneliness, heartbreak, chaos, anxiety, and paranoia to a certain degree. I know--I'm definitely not mincing words here. Nonetheless when I'm lonely or down, it has often been mental health-related art that has transcended me from my problems. I honestly feel that when people laugh at others with mental illness, they don't even know what they're laughing about. Their laughter is… Continue

Minutiae No. 2 in Progress

Here are some pages from the upcoming issue of Minutiae No. 2, which will be available at my Etsy shop. It's a collection of observations from my second month living in Richmond, Virginia. Hopefully this will be ready to go by the end of this month.…

Girl Photographer Four

I've completed a 24 hour zine challenge zine - unintentionally! I should have got it done weeks ago but it ended up being a last minute crazy dash before the Ffotogallery Book Arts Fayre on Saturday. This issue is full colour, quarter sized and 24 pages long - a mite smaller than usual since I made it in such limited time.

Girl Photographer 4 features a story about being an extremely un-corporate person attempting the early morning London… Continue

I am writing a zine with Hempy about Duke of Edinburgh. I finished the first part of the zine on Monday and will start the second part tomorrow. Also, my French, it is very bad. :)

So, I shall continue in English though there is not much to say now. I am still waiting to meet up with… Continue

Everybody Moon Jump #4

1/4 perzine, 80 pages

$3 or trade for some of your zines. This be a text heavy zine.

Sew I taught myself how to sew and it's sew easy and that's how I bound my zine. I won't needle you with anymore sewing puns, but let me know how you felt...thimble.

EMJ #4 is about meeting a woman who tells me of this story of when she went to Australia, buying balloons, and getting my bike stolen.

LAFFS! GAGZ! CATHARTIC LOLZ!

Media Overload and Zines

Billy the Bunny (loop distro), Kate (Sandler) and I have been having various discusses among ourselves over the past few weeks on the nature of zines, what’s changed over the past years, and the direction of where they might be going in the future. We decided to take some of the finer points from our conversations and write them down to hopefully start an interesting discussion. I'd love to get some other people's thoughts. Check out what Billy has to say here:… Continue

Musea Art Contest 8/18/09 Zinesters Look if you Dare to be Quizzed!

The answer to, and winner (if any) for,

our last contest question of:

When I write my piano pieces – I call them bagatelles -

I most often write them in the ABA form. That means that I start

with a melody passage or theme. Then I switch to

a second melody passage or variation of that theme. And finally I repeat the first passage to end it. That’s the ABA form.

(Personal note: In my case I like to do a major key part, then minor key, then back to the major key… Continue

Musea E-mail Club #481 Bio #2 What That Could Mean

Start with the basic concept of catabolic and anabolic biochemistry. I suggest that that biochemistry evolved to many novel forms and developments.

I suggested a list in the first part of this two parter of what that could mean if proven true.

Then at the end I suggest reasons why the catabolic and anabolic divisions have stayed separate for all these billions of years.

At last Crone!

Yes, at last I have finished Crone! It's 20 pages A5 and is a more, I would say, literary zine than Estrones. It has a piece about getting older, a recipie, a story written by me, another short article, an article about the four daughters of the late Tsar from the "Girls' Realm" magazine of 1901 and an article about Lady Charlotte Guest (one of my heroes).

My husband took it with him to London today and he'll be photocopying it at work. (My worries that he wouldn't be… Continue

Eaves of Ass!

We are (finally) carrying Craven Rock's long-running Eaves of Ass zine, one of my absolute favorites. We just added:

Eaves of Ass #6- The music issue! Essays from this went on to be included in 2008's Best American Music Writing collection.

Eaves of Ass #7- Brand new! In the vein of new journalism,… Continue

MAKING AND RECIEVING ZINES ---

and yet another excerpt from my perzine "EXTRANJERO" #7 By Kris about my first trip back to the USA in 3 years

5 April: A lot of friends and family members are coming over tonight to say hello and get drunk and whatnot. So my mother, Lola and I go to the supermarket (after another big breakfast! – this time it was Southern biscuits and gravy). At the supermarket I get another unexpected shock. We don´t have much variety in Plasencia´s supermarkets. If we want to make something “special” - like Mexican or Japanese food - there is quite a bit of preparation that goes into finding what we need. (There is… Continue

Some pictures...

I had a tremendously awesome 24 Hour Zine Thing & Reading at my library, and I took some pictures during the reading. I wish I had thought to take pictures during the zinemaking portion of the event, which had over 20 attendees including an 8 year old and a 78 year old. At least 8 of the attendees completed zines (including the 8 year old!). The reading had over 40 attendees. I was boggled at the event's success, which was mostly due to the draw of 6 great zine readers...…

Jazz Quarterly #2

As my surname implies, I consider myself a journalist, not to mention a REPORTER. So as a side project to the creative writing project class at the IPRC (that I may or may not be a part of) I am going to continue working on writing about my passion of jazz music and beat culture--some of the true stuff of Portland that I cannot deny any longer! Zines aren't just about fictional self-indulgent bullshit; it's my opinion that they should also inform the reader. Hence the "journalist" moniker. Need… Continue

Catchall update.

I moved (again) to the next town over (again), but I work all the time. I have been dragging out zines that I have loved (or zines that randomly I've had for years and haven't read). I miss creating and am going to (sometime in the near future) take all of my brain poopings (journals, drawings, etc) and stick 'em on some pages and take them to the printer. Be prepared.

Musea E-mail Club #481 Big News in Biology? Catabolic Anabolic Division

Some of you know I have a great interest in biology. This post is about some recent ideas that I have had that I think may be new and important. I'm going to take some time on the introduction, so it will make more sense to you. Please bare with me.

Let's start with metabolism. That's the chemical processes in all living things.

Metabolism is divided into two categories. These are important for you to know before the rest of this makes sense. They are CATABOLISM, and ANABOLISM.… Continue

I-Phones

What the hell is with these things? Is Apple really that desperate for money? I mean, c'mon, why would you need any of that shit in the first place? Um...there's this thing you can carry around called a LAPTOP. To simplify even further, there is internet connection, laptop or no. People who are this hooked on technology deserve to be condemned. And coming from me, that is a very extreme comment. I barely ever condemn anybody unless they've done something very horrible to me. But when you're… Continue

another excerpt from my perzine "EXTRANJERO" about my first trip back to the USA in 3 years By Kris

3 April: After about 5 hours of sleep I´m wide awake & quietly get out of bed & walk out into the sunroom. The sun is just coming up over the horizon & I spot 3 deer grazing on some of the bushes in my parent´s back yard. My father is making a pot of coffee & telling me that the local deer have been wandering down into their yard &, much to my mother´s dismay, eating everything in sight.

“The god damned builders have ripped up 40 acres of forest down by Pheasant… Continue

How do you think we could grow to have this? How could we make real your dreams of better worlds? Share your words and pictures and dreams with me!
