Progress being made

No one here knows who I am, but I don't feel like putting down a history lesson all about myself today. I think I'll just jump in to the middle of the story here and we can fill in the blanks later. Cool? Cool.

I recently decided to start a new 'zine project, set to debut at the Gluestick Festival in Indianapolis at the beginning of July. A per-zine, like the ones I used to make. It turns out that feels different as a forty one-year-old than it did when I was in my twenties.…

CRIES FROM THE GULAG, Number Two, Mar., 2017

Number 2, March, 2017

James N. Dawson, Publisher

P.O. Box 950

Spokane, WA  99210

Prisons have many rules about what a prisoner can get in the mail, too many to list here.  Generally, stickers and metal clasp envelopes are not allowed.  Keep mailings simple---just your letter and/or your zine---to increase the chance it won't get returned.  Anything too extreme---e.g., violence, porn....may get rejected.  I hope you'll find a few people to write…

WMZ Mentioned in my 200th Issue, 100 Page Zine Musea, People Issue

WMZ has a nice mention in my big 200th issue of Musea, both a people issue of all the people I've known connected to the zine, and an underground history of Dallas 1992-2017.

For mention of many zines, see zine chapter, and online chapter.

Utopian Cinema

The first new zine I've made in over a year is now available in my shop!

Titled UTOPIAN CINEMA, it grew out of an artist residency I did this summer where I ran a screening and discussion series of "utopian" films. Our culture seems to be saturated with dystopian narratives, but utopian ones are a lot harder to come by these days. So this might be of interest to anyone looking for some hopeful viewing suggestions in these dark times.…

Censored Art News (see entry for how media has blocked zines.

Censored Art News.

Those who protest major media say that many important political issues are never covered. They rightly fight against censored news. I agree. The press should go beyond the scandal of the few and cover the issues of the millions.

But the problem is more than censored political or social issues. There is censored art news. This article looks at some major art stories that are seldom talked about.

When was the last time you heard a protest song on…

Writings In Science, sci-fi novel by Musea, has hard science too

Quizzical answer to last one, and question for the next

The answer to, and winner (if any) for, our last contest question of:

How many words in English have only one letter. Clue this is a trick question.

Thousands. Craig Conley in his book One-Letter Words, a Dictionary, and website lists pages and pages. Here are some samples. A team, B list, C battery, D cup ..

"Conley teaches us that each letter's many different meanings span multiple subjects, including science—B denotes a blood type and also is a symbol for… Continue
