my overview of SF Zine Fest 2010

I woke up excited! We drove to the Oakland BART station and parked. We

took BART to Embarcadero and then got on MUNI metro, N line, to Golden

Gate Park. First we ate Indian food for lunch. (I'd called my friend J

to invite her, but she was already having lunch with different

friends.)

Then we headed to the zine fest! I was excited knowing that eventually we would run into Jen and MC of ButterSword fame. We entered the Fair… Continue

New!(sletter for September)

Hello all! And a warm welcome to the many new folks who signed up at last week's Portland Zine Symposium, a blast that cleaned us out and filled us up. Many new things, many things we need to restock. I've been a bit obsessed with helping orchestrate/conceptualize a tour, so my mind has been in the clouds and I've been catching up on distro-related things very slowly. Despite my slowness, this month is still one of the best months ever. Especially if you want to do some reading. It runs the… Continue

WMZ weekly art quiz - test your art smarts and good luck

The answer to, and winner (if any) for, our last contest question of:

This struggling writer had gotten 5 books published that year, 1900. It was near Christmas and he needed some money for presents. He asked his publisher for an advance. They gave him a check on one of his book's earnings. He thanked them and went home without looking at the check. When he handed it to his wife he noticed it was for 1,423.98 which is about 40 or 50 thousand in today's money! The book that…

Afrodisiac: Addendum

Last week I blogged about being asked to write the forward to my buddy Damon's upcoming book Afrodisiac. I said that I was gonna start penning some thoughts within a day or two of that post, but inspiration struck about an hour later and I actually wrote it before going to bed that night/morning.

The next day, after Damon…

All quiet on the zine front lately. At least for me. Been wanting to make powderbox 3, but so much has happened since powderbox 2 that I don't know where to begin. Maybe I'll forego the catchup and just do something informative and novel. We'll see.

mélange #3 is about 1/3 done. I've got most of the writing done - just gotta carve it into a nice shape now. I'm actually looking forward to the end of the mélange series. Yes, there is an end. Can't quite see it yet, but there…

Mr. Pauper - Five (5) Questions

1) Mr. Pauper, in whom do you believe?

--- What a silly question, but such nice grammar! I believe in everyone. We all exist.

But, oh! how the head aches to think of the few heard in such a brave world!

We all serve a purpose, but so many refuse to succeed. So much easier to believe

in mortality and, therefore, futility, and…

Razor Sharp Haze Daze

The first issue of the perzine was created during the 24hour zine thing. After that, I was hooked. Cutting pictures and phrases from magazines and newspapers, pasting them and this includes a nice collage at the back of the zine, handwriting and the sound of the typewriter at all hours, the feeling you get when the zine is finally finished being written/typed up, learning how to photocopy double pages, the beginning of my fascination with the stapler and how…

Selling on Consignment?

When it comes to sellin' zines though brick-n-mortar stores, there are just three retailers that I deal with: Atomic Books in Baltimore (sampled above), Chicago Comics and Quimby's Bookstore, both of which I am proud to say are back in my hometown.

The aforementioned are retail establishments that…

Anti-Internet Rant 355,000,000.2: My Complaint to the USPS

Your options don't apply, but your automated system forces me to choose one. The name and address was correct and was delivered to the right place. My package was severely damaged.

My package from Vitacost, received Friday, Sept. 3, opened today, was very beat up. The items---vitamins, instant tea, soap and toothpaste, were covered in dust. The liquid soap's lid was half-unscrewed and leaking over the other items. The plastic tea jar was cracked, leaking and mixing with the…
