Some Music Rebellion on July Fourth

Music for the last few decades has been OK. It's been professionally done and auto tuned so the notes are on pitch; but it has not been very exciting. What we need on this July 4th is a little rebellion in the music in the country. Not more of a music chart with a downhill arrow.

Music needs something to challenge it or upset it, or get it excited again. We've had the bland for decades, what we need is something like Elvis or The Beatles. Something out of left field that really shakes… Continue

International Zine Month - My post and Day 2 & 3

July is International Zine Month. Are you gonna take part in the festivities?  What are the festivities, you ask? Well, first and foremost is making a zine. Lots of Zine Fests happen in July and August, so many people are already working hard on zines to have for the festivals....

Hi!

I do a zine called Cake Time (http://www.caketimeboston.com, mostly artwork, some poetry), and am working on an interview zine called This Ain't No Picnic. I'm also warming up to the idea of trying some comics. Some zines I've read recently and enjoyed: I Swallowed the Key to My Heart by Liz Prince, Cyanide Milkshake by Liz Suburbia,  Nothing Mattress by Brian Connolly, Bets Are Off by Nate Powell, Miss Sequential by Marisa Falco.

IZM 2013!

I was so excited about _finally_ kicking my ass in July with the help of the IZM-challenges...and then I got ill! Precisely on the 1st of July! That's really plain torture, especially because, of course, I got ill exactly on my 4 days off. Can you believe that? Life's just not fair sometimes. But, there are always good sides to the bad events. I still completed my first two challenges, but I just wrote them in my diary and only now have the energy back to post them here. And: I followed through… Continue

IZM - Day Two

I made another Wordpress post here. I'm not trying to be sneaky and divert you away from WMZ to MY blog...it's more to hold myself accountable and actually post there which I haven't done since last year, so feel free to check it out. I do a quick review of the Kent Ross zine Photomill 2: Tales From the Cadaver Lab and also list my IZM Top 10 Favorite Things.

IZM Day 2. Ten Reason We love Zines

1.Zines come from the heart. Whether you heart is broken, happy, or just feeling meh. Zines mean something.

2. You need no reason to make one. Thinking to hard about starting a project can really hurt your brain. Why not start a zine about absolutely nothing?! It could soon escalate into something bigger than you expected.

3. i hate grammar! and i feel free to express it though zines!

4. You know that super talented friend of yours? Would't it be…

IZM - Day 2 - Ten Reasons I Love Zines

  1. Anyone can make one.
  2. You don’t need permission to make one
  3. You don’t have to get an editor’s approval to be published
  4. You can write a zine on a computer, a typewriter, with a paint brush, or hand write it, whatever you want.
  5. And do layout with a pair of scissors and a glue stick. No fancy software needed.
  6. Zines can be about whatever topic moves you.
  7. Zines are a labor of love.
  8. They’re about expressing something, not selling…
