International Zine Month - Recap

Today is the last day of International Zine Month and the last activity is to write a blog on We Make Zines. So here it is.

This month was good. It could have been better really, I wrote all about it on my 24-Hour Zine Thing issue for this year. I expected most of this month to be all about crafts, and that every day I would make something artsy in relation to zines. But a lot of it was non-crafty stuff. So I was a little disappointed.

But really, this month I…

This Building Talks to Me (poem)

This Building Talks to Me (poem)

In the morning, when I’m

the first to get here

this building talks to me.

We converse on concrete

and wind causing shear

and if there’s a pipe that leaks.

I check for bruises

and screws that are loosest

or cracks that seem to be spreading

or noises that drop

out of some hidden nook

where there shouldn’t be any.

And it in return

in its stout stoic way

opens… Continue

Quiz Question for the Qurious

The answer to, and winner (if any) for, our last contest question of:

February 1964. This record's lyrics cause a big stir. Are they pornographic? FCC investigates and reports back, "Unintelligble at any speed we play it." Name that tune!

IS:

"Louie Louie" by the Kingsmen.

Rock and Roll Trivia - the same week that the Kingsmen recorded this classic, Paul Revere and the Raiders recorded it and IN THE SAME STUDIO!

Their version was the regional hit, but the Kingsmen went… Continue

New zine BOTH/AND

Well, since it's International Zine Month and I figured I would write SOMETHING about my most current zine. It's called Both/And, and it's kind of about addiction, kind of about anxiety, kind of about meditation...I don't want to label it too much but it's most definitely QUEER and most definitely MENTAL HEALTH-based (I am a therapist). So, yeah, if anyone wants to trade, that would be rad. I also have issues of my previous zine called THE KEG THE CAKE THE COCK left too, which is also kind…

7-th One (cd preview final song)

My new CD is just about officially out. There are 14 songs. Though you can't hear them yet, you can hear others from me and my guitar, that have the same style, tempo, and feeling. Here's a first look - all songs performed in the: 'THIS GUITAR IS AS GOOD AS A BAND' voice and guitar style.

14 God Bless The Child: I like to end my CD's with a "Big" song. That's a song that usually starts out slow and quiet and grows to symphonic levels of emotion! This Billy Holiday song fits the bill!… Continue

Who's Rebelling Now? Rock is Over

Who’s Rebelling Now? (Rock is Over)

When rock started, those musicians were rebelling against a boring world – now they’ve become the boring world!

The real news is the music revolution – I may be the only person on the planet to oppose what rock/rap/country/pop have become, but I doubt if I’ll be the last.”

Rock for me is over. Time for it to join barbershop quartets and big bands – music from last century. It has become everything it started out rebelling against. If it… Continue

3 Masters (poem)

I dreamt I flew to old Italy
to meet 3 masters there.
Michelangelo was stubborn and principled
with a tempestuous head of red hair.
Da Vinci said little and gazed back at me
his eyes piercing how I worked;
and Raphael, with stains on his blouse,
was too busy courting the girls!

A Very Difficult Postal Clerk

A couple weeks ago I ordered a couple inkjet cartridges from an Amazon.com seller.  They e-mailed the estimated arrival time of July 11, then July 16.  By Saturday it hadn't come, so I thought I'd better see what's going on.  As usual, it took some scrutiny to find out what links led to the tracking.  There was no link to it on the shipping confirmation page like other companies I shop with.  I had to guess by clicking on other links until it led me to tracking.

When I looked at the…

New zines on Take Care

Hello again zineoids, just thought I'd let you know we've just added a bunch of new zines to the Take Care website. They include a stack of new zines from Tamara Lazaroff, including 'Tonight, Everybody in the Street' and ' Walnuts, Almonds, Nuts'; a new zine from Ciara Xyerra (she who used to run Learning to Leave a Paper Trail distro) called 'Ella Funt' that is all about her preparing to have a baby; both issues of Bastian Fox Phelan's anti-facebook 'How to be Alone'; a Debbie Harry…
