I was thinking today that I should really have a set theme to keep me focussed on the zine as i have so many other things going on right now in the real world.
So........The theme will be about following your dreams as this last year I've just returned to art college and it's been a struggle to juggle everything (ooo stuggle to juggle.....may use that phrase!) Also I would be good for anyone that is stuck in a mundane job like I am and wants to do something different. So I guess… Continue

I like knitting, but I'm really bad at it.........
........what would make it really fun, would be a stich 'n' bitch group here in Leeds.
So, if there are any keen knitteratti out there, beginners or pro's - get in touch and we should start a weekly meet in a coffee shop or maybe the common place?

I know that I've made 121 because I photocopied them all again for the exhibition "Avoiding Myth and Message: Australian Artists and the Literary World", which is currently on at the MCA, Sydney.
If you do go along, do write me a postcard - there is a shiny red postbox and a stack of blank cards for this purpose. Keep the numbers of messages from primary school kids, and teenagers quoting the Mighty Boosh down, write to me!
The exhibition's on til the 12th of July.

...are (finally) being added. And more on their way.
I've been a little confused on how to go about shipping charges and have been doing this $2 flat rate (in the U.S.) that allows people to buy as much as they want and it will just be two bucks of shipping, which seemed great for people who wanted two records, a cd, and a zine, but kinda sucked when someone just wanted one zine. So, now there's no shipping on zines and the price just kind of includes shipping. It's hard to keep the super… Continue

I think issue #7 of RatBrat did its job...I'm officially in love with zines again.
Issue #6 was published in January or February after a year of being out of touch with the zine community--no trades, no distroing, no writing, no collate/fold/staple. Between that and issue #7, my love for zines and my connection to all you wonderful zinesters has been rekindled.
It felt soooo good this morning to go to the post office at 8 AM and mail out 5 or 6 zine trades. I have to mail… Continue

I'm pretty ashamed of my lack of writing for the past months. Not so much that I haven't been writing, but everything is just listed out "what i did today" "to do" "This pissed me off...blah blah blah." Trivial stuff. Journal things. One sentence proclamations.
Anyway, a few nights ago I got on the computer and typed out a good concrete nine/ten paragraphs of abstract writing. I finished reading "Please Don't Kill the Freshmen" by Zoe Troppe for the second time. I'm always amazed by… Continue

The media watchdog, FAIR.org (Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting) has the perfect sum up of my media concerns. It encapsulates everything I've been trying to say in a couple of paragraphs. I wanted to reprint it for you and I encourage you to check out their site for more. The media isn't tough on itself, but fair is tough on the media.
From FAIR website (fair.org)
"Independent, aggressive and critical media are essential to an informed democracy. But… Continue

It is finished. I spent the entire weekend putting it together. Damn I feel like I accomplished something for a change. I'm already starting another issue... the writing part anyway. And I'm working on an 8 page mini that will be nothing but doodling. I may send it along with other stuff as an extra.

On April 25 my daughters and I attended Kids’ Comic Con 2009
at Bronx Community College. We were invited by Mike Weiss, whose daughter Jessica is co-producer of PB&J Comics and a fixture at East Coast zine fests.
This was a really interesting event. For one thing, I haunt some key NYC comic stores regularly, and never heard a thing about this (it was the third annual con). I’m not sure how it was built, but the turnout… Continue

On Friday, April 24, I received a letter of rejection from the Texas Department of "Corrections" for Absent Cause
#2. Copies of the zine had been requested by four prisoners on death row in Huntsville.
The reason given is "Publication contains sexually explicit images" on pages 45 and 49. These are the painting "Tofu's Kiss" by Toni Lynn Crane and the photograph "It's What's Inside" by Heidi Calvert, featuring model Sash Suicide. Both are provocative explorations of women's… Continue

I love starting things. I am a chronic beginner. Mostly this is restricted to my reading materials - I'd say at least 50% of the books on my shelf are half finished, or just started, or even almost entirely read but for some reason discarded a few chapters from the end. Zines are pretty great because the time it takes to read them is usually shorter than the time it takes for me to get sick of reading them or become interested in something else. It's a symptom of my generation: me and all the… Continue

The answer to, and winner (if any) for,
our last contest question of:
This is a question that will give portrait artists or those that know anatomy a 'leg up'. Everyone knows how to draw the outline of an ear. But it's harder to draw the little 'Y" shaped cartilage within the outer ear. What's the name of this "Y" shaped cartilage?
The anti helix - the helix is the ridge that surrounds the ear.
We had no correct answers
It seems all of you were… Continue

I have sort of fallen slack on my zine duties because I am now a program director full time at the Zootown Arts Community Center in Missula MT. http://www.zootownarts.com. I think by late summer I will be much more in the swing of zines again, but right now just spending a ton of time on fundraising and administrative things, plus teaching my class. Its great! But I don't check this place often , and I don't want to lose touch with this community. You are all more than… Continue
