Monstress Zine

Whirr Clank Grr!

I'm a Michiganeer who lived in Canada for a long ass time. Now I've returned to the Midwest. I like Lake Michigan, industrial splendor, fireflies, monsters, bone, ice cream mochi and black sesame caramels. My current zine is called Monstress. I've been making it since 2001 and am on my 11th issue. Each issue is organized around a different monster and then has related material--homemade pulp fiction, comics, letters, movie reviews, historical material.

Some other zines I've made: MadCow 1-10; Bacteria!; Life On Mars: A Bacteria! Comic; Seize the Means of Production; Tuebor: The Michigan Zine; Graveyard Alive: A Zombie Nurse in Love; In the Cultural Gutter; Color All Monsters! Coloring Book. You can see Monstress and some of the other zines at etsy.

I've run a lot of zine workshops for girls and young women and I also put together the zine component for Queer Reflections, a multimedia biography project for Queer seniors.

I also write about comics for The Cultural Gutter, a website dedicated to disreputable media and genres. I've been the Gutter's publisher since October, 2007.  We have a book, published by Carnegie-Mellon University's ETC Press! You can follow the Gutter on Facebook , Twitter or Tumblr.

I've read twice for John Crye's You Will Not Make It In Hollywood podcast. If you'd like, you can hear me read "Frank Miller's Hot Gates" and "Godzilla vs. MechaRealism." Guess which one features me with a cold. John's a member of Fewdio, a collective that makes horror shorts. Watch'em here. And I've provided illustration for a reading of "Herbert West, Re-Animator" on Monster Island Resort Podcast.

As if that's not enough, I write about movies for the Toronto International Film Festival Midnight Madness Blog and was editor of the 2011 blog. (The 2011 Midnight Madness Blog is here), have written for Teleport City and am an agent of The Mysterious Order of the Skeleton Suit.

I'm also freaked out to be an editor for Jim Munroe's comics, Therefore, Repent!, Time Management for Anarchists and Sword of My Mouth.

Gah!

I can't believe how long it's been since I updated things here. Since I last added photos or wrote, I've provided illustrations for a reading of "Herbert West, Re-Animator" at Monster Island Resort Podcast. (You can look and listen here: http://0316bfc.netsolhost.com/blog/?p=923). I had some of them made into postcards, which I'm selling at my Etsy shop.

I'm hoping to be able to start making more Monstress again, now…

I am back in the USA and have a new address. I also have some new ideas of the artsy-fartsy variety. Hopefully, I can get my studio set up and the, bam, ART!

Bringing More Wrong

Posted on January 3, 2010 at 11:56pm 2 Comments

I can tell that somewhere deep inside me I've already begun "Good Night, Cephalopod." I've already got the text and have been kind of stuck on the drawings--and distracted by life. But I'm getting that drawing feeling. This will be my second zine done entirely in colored pencil.

I'm interested in finding a zine in need of artwork. Can you recommend any? My drawings can be seen on http://chris.michaelherring.net/ or on my Mars Newsletter on www.blackpetals.net under the Mars Newsletter. Thank you for your time and consideration. Thank you.

WHAT? You edit Jim Munroe's work?! That is so cool. I saw him speak at the Underground Publishing Conference several years ago and have followed his projects and writing online ever since. What a smart dude he is. Thank you for making friends on here. If you'd ever like to trade let me know. Your monster drawings and Day of The Dead lino cut are lovely.

Especially when they are also made of boxes.

Thanks! I made it ages ago when I lived in Vancouver. It never got any more finished than that sadly. I only have the dinosaur-head hand left. Though by "have" I mean "is in a box somewhere and maybe it will arrive someday."
I have plans to make robot hands for halloween though.
