descriptions of my zines
shortandqueer #11: The best thing that happened today was… May-December 2008 - 2008 was a hard year, so this "best thing" issue felt more important than ever to be a reminder of all of the amazing things that have happened amid some really daunting challenges.
shortandqueer #10: The reawakening of my baseball fandom – The Phillies are the 2008 World Series champions! This issue documents Kelly Shortandqueer’s longtime baseball fandom including how the sport was central in his relationship with his dad, the amazing 1993 Phillies team, the 2008 postseason and Kelly’s longing for radical/queer sports space. This zine comes with a special insert: The original paper Kelly wrote in 8th grade called “Prejudice in Baseball”.
shortandqueer #9: The best thing that happened today was… January-April 2008 – Once again, Kelly Shortandqueer documents the best thing of the day. Shortandqueer 9 chronicles January-April 2008.
shortandqueer #8: I am not unreasonable – The most serious of the shortandqueer series, #8 focuses on Kelly Shortandqueer’s struggle with gender. This zine begins with a response to an e-mail that didn’t feel so good and is followed by excerpts from Kelly’s journals, dating back to 2000.
shortandqueer #7: Hello World! – Assembled for the Denver Zine Fest, Kelly Shortandqueer compiled some random pieces written for other zines as well as some new ridiculous stories. This issue includes irrational fears, his fifth grade birthday party, awkward and hilarious interactions with coworkers and more.
shortandqueer #6: Now that I’m a dude – After being out as a transguy for about a year and a half, Kelly Shortandqueer has had some ridiculous experiences. In shortandqueer #6, he write about how some things have changed in his life while others haven’t. Health, dating, co-workers, and weird interactions are the focus of this zine.
shortandqueer #5: The best thing that happened today was… (part 2) – This is a continuation of sq3, where Kelly Shortandqueer wrote down the best thing that happened every day. This zine mostly takes place in Chicago.
shortandqueer #4: The Coming Out Issue – This zine documents interactions Kelly Shortandqueer had with friends and family as he started coming out as transgender. Much of the zine is about his relationship with his mom, e-mails back and forth, letters, etc, that illustrate how far she’s come to be supportive. It also includes some pieces Kelly wrote for The Tranny Roadshow.
shortandqueer #3: The best thing that happened today was… – For 101 days, Kelly Shortandqueer wrote down the best thing that happened to him. This zine documents those best things, illustrating his sometimes silly, sometimes weird, sometimes boring and always geeky life.
shortandqueer #2: Things I like / don’t like – This zine was Kelly Shortandqueer’s attempt to get over his fear of drawing. In it, Kelly illustrates things he likes and things he doesn’t like.
shortandqueer #1: Friends are Important – Dedicated to his friends, Kelly Shortandqueer wrote stories about and included pictures of those folks who have been important in his life over the years. While the stories are about those friends, it also gives lots of insight into Kelly’s life.
Trans(in)formation – A resource zine documenting zines with transgender/genderqueer content or by transgender/genderqueer publishers. It includes contact information as well as excerpts from some of those zines.
