Hi. My name is Katie, and I make zines. I write one called aubade. It is the most important thing I do in my spare time. I also write a weird sort of angry philosophical zine called we are not machines! I just moved to Portland in August from my home state of Virginia. I love reading zines a lot, and I write about it sometimes on the web. Here, actually. I'm also a fan of letter writing, book reading, and scone making, among other things.

If you are interested in getting a copy of aubade, or any of the other projects I do, or if you'd just like to say hi or be penpals, write me a letter!

Hi Katie, I really enjoyed reading Remembering Elliot. "Say Yes" was a significant song to me and one of my faves as well. I was thinking lots of people should make their own "Remembering Elliot" zines and each would be sub-titled a different song. I might do one. It would be a neat way to honor him and not forget him. Anyway, just wanted to say hi and thanks for doing your zine.

I never wrote you back...

I go to PCC- Cascade and after class on my way to the bus I stopped at the North Portland Library. They had two little magazine holder type things with a paper describing that it was a "Zine Exchange Program"... People leave a copy of a zine and then take one home to keep or return. You dont need a library card or anything. I thought that was a really cool idea. Have you seen this? I went to the Central Library in downtown and they didn't have the Zine Exchange box.

Yeah, I had no idea Portland could get into the 80's. That's crazy to me. This summer I will be moving out of this attic and getting a two bedroom place with a friend that is suppose to be moving up here. So I'm trying to see where cheap rent it. What's rent like near the Hollywood district? I know where that is, I think the 44 or the 75 bus line goes by there.

8 months? Are you glad you moved here?
I don't think I will ever regret moving here.

"where i go, little stories about my favorite places" is that at the library? The cover and name look familiar...

Yeah, I live in an attic! It's really big too, totally better than the 10ft by 6ft room I rented back in San Dimas for $475 a month...
About two days before I moved up here I found out my Mom has a cousin that lives in North Portland... So I gave her a call and she said I was more than welcome to stay with her. (does that make her my 2nd cousin? cousin once removed? It's confusing, I try not to think about it, haha)
So, I'm living in the attic of a middle aged lesbian woman in an industrial part of North Portland, ha. She's really cool too.

What is your attic like?!

my brother's name is andy barbour. but if you didn't go to ch, i don't know if you'd know him. he graduated in 02. no you aren't a loser, that sounds awesome. i hate high school and often wished i could have gone to midlothian instead. i mean, midlothian is two minutes away from my parents' house and ch was like 10-15. it was stupid.

what did the international baccalaureate program involve? i don't know that they had options like that when i was there. or maybe they did and i just didn't know.

i am working on something right now, but my old zines are out of print. although some people have asked me recently for some of those and i'm thinking about printing up small print runs of them.

you know, the thought just came to me that you might've gone to school with my lil bro. what year did you graduate? i graduated in 98.
