Zines are amazing because, when I read them, I feel like I'm having a conversation with a new best friend. I've been reading zines since I was ten years old. I'm twenty-six now, and I am currently working on a couple of zines. One zine I am currently working on is "Seen/ Unzine", which is a comic zine. The first issue of that should be ready by the beginning of next year. My personal zine is "Impossibles". Impossibles is a perzine, but it focuses on things in my culture that are hidden from view or not talked about. I try to keep my zines under forty pages, so all the zines listed below are about that long or just a little bit longer if I can help it. 1/2 size.

Issue one is about being diagnosed with schizo-affective disorder, how it's affected me over the years, a small essay about a nasty trip to a county ward, and has a list at the end of helpful things to do if you feel a little unstable. There's a couple of parts that are a bit triggering, as they are old journal entries from when I wasn't doing well.  Overall, it is thematically dark, so it is probably not a light read. From October 2010.

Issue two is about living in Orlando, Florida. It's a series of short essays about how I feel about the city, the beach that is actually 45 minutes away, the largest flea market in the United States, crazy ass street preachers, and the arty/ punk scenes around town.  There's also some okay black and white pictures of the city proper. It is a much lighter read than issue one, and I had a lot of fun writing it! From April 2011

Issue three is about growing up as a woman in an extremely strict, Christian fundamentalist culture. It's another series of short essays about how traditional gender roles are forced on young girls, how I started to question religion in general, a little bit about the particular sect my family belongs to, my complete rejection of all of the values I grew up with and how it affected me, and an essay at the end about how I managed to blend the best parts of the culture I left and my new values.  It's not quite a light read, but I don't think it's nearly as dark as issue one. It got reviewed in Xerography Debt #30. From July 2011.

Issue four of my zine is about being a black woman and the culture I grew up in.  It is a series of personal stories about how I feel about the things that define me racially and goes a little bit into black culture. There's a little bit of everything in there from short essays about my skin tone and natural hairstyles to observations about social hierarchy. If you want to learn a little bit about black culture from a black woman's perspective, it's pretty good for that. From September 2012.
