Brainscan zine, Stolen Sharpie Revolution, Portland Button Works and zine distro

Alex Wrekk= DIY By Default

Hi, my name is Alex Wrekk and I have been making the zine Brainscan since 1997 and I have just completed issue #30! I have made several one-off zines like I'm A Wrekk, Birthdays & Christmas, Time Zones and Statelines, Fire Apparatus, and more. I also wrote the book Stolen Sharpie Revolution.

I live in Portland, Oregon USA. I am an organizer for the Portland Zine Symposium. I was an open hours staff volunteer at the Independent Publishing Resource Center (IPRC) for many years. I am an organizer for the Portland Zine Symposium. I created a website with a Zine Event Calendar at StolenSharpieRevolution.org and started July is International Zine Month.

I make custom 1", 1.25" & 2.25" buttons at Portland Button Works and Zine Distro and shop. I also sell my my zines, & my own catalog button designs,  I also have an Etsy site for my items and I am a Team Leader for Etsy TeamZine.

I also like to ride my bike, garden, travel, play with photocopiers, drink and brew craft beer, play at home repair, and cook vegan food.

Working on the 5th edition of Stolen Sharpie Revolution and I need your photos!

Posted on January 15, 2014 at 6:00pm 5 Comments

With 21,000 copies of the book in print through 4 editions, Stolen Sharpie Revolution has been the go-to resource for zines and zine culture since 2002. However, Stolen Sharpie Revolution is currently out of print. I’m about to launch a Kickstarter campaign to fund a 5th edition and I need your help! I’d like to make a Kickstarter promo video with photos of Stolen Sharpie Revolution, including your photos! Show me photos of SSR on your bookshelf, in a shop window, on a table at a zine fest. Show me SSR with with you cats, dogs, or hedgehogs! I’d love to see a copy in the middle of you floor scattered with zine making scraps, tucked out of your backpack, or being read in public. All submissions that are included in the video will receive a free copy of the book when it is printed. All submissions must be received by 2 February 2014 Submissions should be sent to: StolenSharpieRevolution@live.com STOLENSHARPIEREVOLUTION.ORG Did you know that the zine resource listings that have always appeared in the back of Stolen Sharpie Revolution are now collected and updated on the StolenSharpieRevolution.org website? The resources were always the most difficult part of upkeep and a website makes this so much easier. Check it out for zine distros, stores that sell zines, a calendar of zine events and more!  As always SSR is only as good as the information I have. If you see that I’m missing something, a ne zine event, a shop in your town that sells zines, a zine distro that hasn’t been included, please send a message through the contact form on the site and I’ll get it added. Please reblog and spread the word! In zines we trust, Alex Wrekk *Multiple copies received from a single person will result on only one free book. Owner of submitted photo reserves all rights to submitted images but may be asked for it to be included in promotional materials.

The Copy Scams record, zine, and digital download coade might make and excellent gift to that zinester that has everything...

Posted on December 13, 2013 at 9:47am 0 Comments

Might I suggest The Copy Scams album? A 10” record with 7 90s style pop punk songs all about zines plus a digital download and a 12 page zine with artwork by me and Steve Larder of Rum Lad Zine.

I also roast my own coffee…

I thought you might find this interesting. This is a perzine I did about a demonic experience I had that led me to Christianity. True story. I used to be on the borderlines of agnostic and atheist, and I was raised Buddhist, but this experience led me to God.

It's a very short zine, I hope it qualifies as one. You can read the PDF form here: The%20Incubus%20a%20testimony.pdf

hi!

I just wanted to say that Stolen Sharpie Revolution rules. Without it I would never have made a zine, found this website and connected with the amazing people I have in the short time since I started making zines. Thank you so much.

Zines, zines are good for your heart,
The more you read, the more you smart,
The more you smart, the better you feel,
So read your zines after every meal!

Hi Alex! I don't know if you remember me, but I'm the journalism student that interviewed you in Halifax, Nova Scotia!

Just to let you know that that piece is going to air this Thursday night and will be up on the website (thefax.wordpress.com) later this week.

I want to thank you so much for being one of the two people that got me interested in zines! I didn't really know much about them before attending the fair in Halifax, but now I'm in the process of making my own! Yay! Thanks so much and I hope you come back to Halifax sometime soon! :)
