LOLA AND THE CARTWHEELS...

Lola is for anyone who wants to get together with a group of like-minded ego-free people to have fun, showcase their skills/talents/art and meet new people. We host monthly meetings for people to get together and discuss what they wanna see, wanna do, would like to learn or just to make good friends, really, in our first year we hosted a monthly clubnight called Coughs and Sneezes Spread Diseases.
The clubnight showcased three/four female oriented or influenced artists followed by a disco with guest DJs and a distro and craft stall.
We basically wanna re-address the gender balance in the Sheffield music scene and also celebrate the many different areas of DIY punk and riot grrrl such as zine workshops, diy DJs and performance art.
We also operate on a not for profit basis, basically aiming to cover the costs of the artists enabling them to spread their word further as well as making sure all of the money we make goes to the bands themselves.
We also run a distro at all our events, get in touch if you wanna add your zine! A full website is coming soon for the Lola and the Cartwheels distro, with zines aplenty, crafts and all kinds of cool things, we'll keep you posted!

picked up a copy of "the worlds a mess...." at the women's library today, haven't read much yet (i have a really short attention span and tend to read little bits here and there over months!) but i thought that the opening page was really inspiring - and it's really the message that i'm trying to get across with the events we're doing - that people can do it themselves and don't need to rely on the mainstream media to write or draw or whatever... i guess you're coming from a slightly different angle but nonetheless it was great the way you talked about how supportive the scene was and how it made you feel to be a part of it, if more people could feel that about their local scene or community then i think our problems as a society would be considerably less! well done,
