Shawn Granton replied to Emma Jane Falconer's discussion Zines named after songs
"No fancy videos, sorry. But I named a few of my comix after songs. "Left of the Dial" (2000) and "Treatment Bound" (2002) were both named after Replacements songs. My compilation "Modern Industry" (2000-1) was named…"

Shawn Granton replied to Amy's discussion PO Box
"And that's the slippery slope. Do your parents know what a zine is, and the fact that you do one? Are they cool with it? If they're not, having a PO Box may mean that they don't find out about what you're doing. If they are…"

Shawn Granton replied to Amy's discussion PO Box
"If you use a pen name or give yourself a "punk rock" last name they're less likely to find you that way. And using a P O Box would make an even bigger disconnect, if you're worried about people finding you."

Profile Information

Haling from the diminutive State Of Connecticut and now a Citizen of Portland, Oregon, Cascadia, I am currently a "freelance artist" (aka penniless bohemian that occasionally draws.) But don't worry, I have a day job that pays the bills. When you are staying at the HI-Portland Hawthorne Hostel if you ever come to Portland (and why the hell would you ever visit Portland?) make sure you say "hi".

I've been drawing the mini-comic TEN FOOT RULE in some form or another since 1996 (though the first issue didn't come out until summer of 1997), so I guess that makes me "old-school". I also put out the comic anthology MODERN INDUSTRY (2000-1), edit the ZINESTER'S GUIDE TO PORTLAND, put out local Portland history/geography zines under the banner of URBAN ADVENTURE LEAGUE, and have contributed comics, illustrations, and writings to a multitude of zines and independent publications over the years. You can check out my regular bi-monthly comic for MOMENTUM MAGAZINE, a cool free magazine documenting bicycle culture around the world. I also do a crapload of flyers and illustrations for various projects in Portland and around the world. And I have been a staffer at the INDEPENDENT PUBLISHING RESOURCE CENTER (IPRC) since 2001.

I like riding my bike aimlessly around the city, bike touring, learning about urban environment, eating burritos, and drinking way too much coffee. I'm REALLY in to community-oriented collaborative type projects. And despite what you may have heard, I don't bite.

You can check out my artwork on my sito page.

Oh yeah, I love zines! And I like trading! And I love actual letters more so than emails and "comment walls". So if you are so inclined, write:

New Comics! And Zines!

Posted on September 21, 2009 at 10:21pm 0 Comments

Hey y'all, sometimes I'm so bad at self promotion that I forget to tell people that I have new stuff! So here's the latest:

NOBODY USES AN UMBRELLA IN PORTLAND: Yet another installment in my series of journal-comix, this one documents my life in the Winter of 2009. Work stuff, travelling (Cali! Canada!) and even a bit o' romance. It's $2 POST-PAID.

CYCLE TOURING PRIMER: This is a guide for those who are curious about, or are intending to do a self-supported bicycle tour.… Continue

I'm not offering you my next zine because it's all in french, and it's kind of annoying to get a zine you cant read, but I'll send you my next english-language issue (probably The Happy Loner #4 in January) :D

The rumors of me moving back to Portland are unfounded. However, I will be visiting around Thanksgiving. I get in late Tuesday night and leave Sunday afternoon. We should meet up some time between that.
