Hi! My name is Samantha Trees! I currently live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and am starting up a zine library. I have written Trees #1, #2 and #3, a personal zine, and am currently working on some other random ideas! I also write poetry.
I've been dreaming about doing this for years now, and have finally committed myself to starting up a Zine Library here in Calgary Alberta. I am very excited about it!
I already have a pretty large collection of zine for the library rounded up from friends, as well from the many generous vendors I met at the Toronto Zine Fair this August (2008), who donated some of their zines.
I'm working on a grant application to come some start up costs and to help fund some fundraising/launch events I plan to do this winter. I need to rent a pobox to recieve zine donations in as well, so I'm hoping to get some funding soon!
I'm currently working on some promo to get the word out about about the library. I'm going to make flyers and throw together a website, calling out for zine and supply donations, as well as for others interested in joining The Zine Tree Collective (the collective I have started working to start up the library).
Right now, not too many people have expressed interest in helping out with the library. Calgary is an insanely busy place right now. We have a really bad Nazi problem that is taking up a lot of people's energy. A lot of people are also just starting school again, or busy with other activist projects. I am happy for now just doing all the groundwork by myself, thought it would be awesome to have more people involved.
I spoke a while ago to a friend who is one of the main organizers for the Good Life Community Bike Shop, a really awesome community bike shop here in Calgary, about the possibility of hosting the zine library in their space. They have a large area that is pretty empty, off to the side of teh shop space. He expressed a lot of interest, but I am yet to find out if it could be a solid plan. I am going to attend one of their general meetings soon and find out.
Other than all that, the library nerd in me is having lots of fun cataloguing all the zines the library already has. I am trying to write zine summaries for all the zines, with a description of what kind of zine they are, who wrote it, what they are about, and contact info for the writer.
I would love to recieve zines from anyone on here for the library. I would love to hear from other people who have started or help run zine libraries. I write a zine myself and am working on the 4th issue now. I'd love to trade copies of that with people on here when it's ready, if they want.
Love and Support,
Samantha!
