The Rebellious Journalist

Howdy!

Please refer to me as Nick, unless you really want to type my full name onto the posts. I am the author of the Rebellious Journalist V (Reviewed in Iconoclast #100) and Jazz Quarterly Issue #1. The Rebellious Journalist is now defunct (although I can make copies), but Jazz Quarterly is moving along and a new issue should be out this winter. I live in Vancouver, WA, just miles away from Portland, OR. I currently volunteer at the Independent Publishing Resource Center as a librarian once a week, and I have a monthly kolumn in CVAB's "the Voice."

In This Day and Age...

...we fight and fight until we fall down. We fight for rights, or money, or sex, or enlightenment, or alienation. But what happens when we fight is we slowly but surely lose energy. We slowly but surely lose our purpose...our souls, essentially. Why do we do this?

Mental Health Zines

I'm a member of this group for a good reason. All people, mental illness or no, deal with feelings of alienation, loneliness, heartbreak, chaos, anxiety, and paranoia to a certain degree. I know--I'm definitely not mincing words here. Nonetheless when I'm lonely or down, it has often been mental health-related art that has transcended me from my problems. I honestly feel that when people laugh at others with mental illness, they don't even know what they're laughing about. Their laughter is prob… Continue

Jazz Quarterly #2

As my surname implies, I consider myself a journalist, not to mention a REPORTER. So as a side project to the creative writing project class at the IPRC (that I may or may not be a part of) I am going to continue working on writing about my passion of jazz music and beat culture--some of the true stuff of Portland that I cannot deny any longer! Zines aren't just about fictional self-indulgent bullshit; it's my opinion that they should also inform the reader. Hence the "journalist" moniker. Need… Continue

I-Phones

What the hell is with these things? Is Apple really that desperate for money? I mean, c'mon, why would you need any of that shit in the first place? Um...there's this thing you can carry around called a LAPTOP. To simplify even further, there is internet connection, laptop or no. People who are this hooked on technology deserve to be condemned. And coming from me, that is a very extreme comment. I barely ever condemn anybody unless they've done something very horrible to me. But when you're focu… Continue

The Indomitable Keith Rosson

"The Best of Intentions Avow Anthology" is fucking incredible. Keith Rosson's short stories are profound, profane, pro-active and professional--not to mention entertaining and amusing as hell! This book is well worth the $12, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants something meaningful and yet fun to read. If you're unsure about buying it, just read a few of the stories and look at some of the pieces of awesome artwork and you will realize that Rosson is a transcending zinester. You don't h… Continue

The Half & Half is stupendous. Good quiche. The art on the walls of the bathroom's a little disarming, however. Good thing they have wifi or I'd punch a hole in the wall.

This is a great idea! Adolescents (especially) need to be exposed to whatever artistic means of expressing themselves there are possible. I was diagnosed with disorganized schizophrenia at age 14, and led a very alienated 4 years of High School wh...

that is a great idea! thanks for the advice. i would love to do that. i definitely want to incorporate zines into the therapeutic process and i think referring them to clients is a great idea-going off that it may be beneficial because a book may be too long or too wordy, esp for a depressed client that lacks motivation-but a zine is shorter, perhaps more easy to read and grasp...so it may be more beneficial than say a book would be...

having them in the office may be good to when working with a resistant client (especially an adolescent) who doesn't want to be there or doesn't want to talk that day..

maybe also i could work with clients (prob adolescent/young adult) on making their own zine or something similar as a way to express themselves/their issues, kind of like telling the story of themselves or of that issue they want to work on..

any other thoughts would be much appreciated, thanks for the input :)

well i am currently working on issue 9 of my zine pulse, which covers all kinds of stuff related to identity, body image, self esteem, gender, ect. but is not specifically therapy focused. i think you are referring to the post i made a while back about using zines in therapy..i am currently getting my masters in mental health counseling and want to work as with adolescents as a therapist specializing in developmental concerns, particularly eating disorders, body image, self-esteem and such. in my work i would LOVE to incorporate zines, as reading material for clients i am seeing, homework assignments possibly or as a medium for clients to be able to express issues they are dealing with..i am not sure how i will be able to do this but hopefully will be able to do to incorporate zines into the therapeutic process..any suggestions? thanks for comment, as you can see i am very passionate about both these subjects :)
