Howdy!
I'm a mama, artist, hard-femme queerdo, art teacher, grad student and zine lover. I've contributed to a few and have facilitated some fabulous student zines. I've never been super comfy with writing, so I rely more on my artwork to speak for me.
I'm currently working on a community cookbook-ish zine that's comprised of food, memories and activities shared by our extended family and friendlies. It's being filled with fave recipes, sheet music, activity pages, artwork, etc. to be enjoyed while the num nums do their thing on the stove top.
I'm constantly looking for submissions for my ongoing project called "Ladies of America". I think that you should contribute...because I need your help. Please read on...
The "Ladies of America" are here to dominate the world with our wit, charm and keen experience with ovulation (or not). We are sharp shooters, snake wranglers, disco queens, broads, genderqueers, derby aficionados, skydivers, spies, doughnut makers, robot trainers and fishmongers. Our fathers are master baiters and our mothers, bearers of good tidings and the human race. The mere mention of our name sends the Lady-haters running for their panties. We are a goddamn inspiration.
I’m in the process of creating 100 portraits using traditional and non-traditional media (printmaking, painting and drawing, found objects, etc) and need many more photos/stories to make my thesis come true. I'm aiming to recognize everyday "Ladies" who work their shit, day in and day out, to make this a better place.
My work pairs non-traditional type ladies (working class women/people, femmes, genderqueers, drag queens/kings, broads, butches, etc.) with traditional lady craft objects, such as embroidered hankies, doilies, etc. It's my small attempt to pay tribute to all of the strong, forgotten ladies throughout history by recognizing the "Broad" in all of us.
Not all portraits are of feminine looking people, but I do fuck with femininity in all portraits.
To submit YOUR Lady of choice, just send me a digital photo with a short write up about what makes your Lady an inspiration. In return for your submission, you will get a print of your Lady in the form of a trading card and a photo of the finished piece. In addition to the paintings and trading cards, I plan to compile a Zine with prints of the Ladies and their stories. You can send the photos to ladiesofamerica@gmail.com
I hope to hear from you!
