I'm 20. Is that too old? I love penpalling with other zinesters!

I write a lot of point-form notes and quick little ideas when I'm feeling like this, both for zine stuff and for fiction. Eventually, my head feels a little clearer, and I can focus on working on just a few of my ideas at a time, finding out how t...

i say try not to organize too much, or rather, organize later. creativity is flowing so get it out and dont worry if it doesnt fit with the idea you had in mind, you can use it for something later.

I tend to write ideas down on whatever I have handy at the time, then re-write them in a notebook to keep them together. When I have some free time I go to a park near where I live to read what I collected and work out the ideas. I like going to t...

When I'm in that situation, I find that writing everything down that I'm thinking of, in note form, helps to clear it out of my head so then I can start to focus on the individual ideas. Just jotting down the rough ideas so I know I won't forget ...

My first zine was called "Octopus Rapids" which is an anagram of "Sodapop Curtis" because The Outsiders was my favorite book at the time (middle school). Then I wrote "And Still We Sleep" which is a line from Todd's poem in Dead Poet's Society, wh...

I sort my ideas into drawers. One drawer of mine is full of stuff for one particular zine I'm planning etc. Other than that, combine ALL the ideas into one zine.

When that happens to me, I grab a bunch of paper and write down one idea on each sheet. Then, as new ideas hit me, I write them on new pieces of paper, or I add them to the existing sheets, if it fits. Eventually, you'll end up with a lot of stuff...

What is RatBrat and who is this Mab girl?

I write a perzine called RatBrat, which is usually half-size, but was recently published in a quarter-size format for the first time. Issues are generally between 25-50 pages long. I write about my life, observations of the world, and anything that is important to me at the time of writing. I use zines for self-expression and to capture things that are relevant in my life in the moment. Subjects in past issues have included having bipolar disorder, general life experiences, book and zine reviews, death, love, and my pets. I also write some fiction and poetry. I try to write about things that I feel are situations and experiences other people might share or relate to, but ultimately, my zines are there for the purpose of emptying my mind and creating things I enjoy.

I am a kick-ass girl living in the middle of Pennsylvania, who loves animals, smokes too many cigarettes, and hasn't traveled enough to satisfy my need for adventure (yet). I am momma to an amazing young parrot, who only knows one word ("What?!"), three ferrets (aka "the girls"), some rats and hamsters, and two gorgeous snakes--a 9-year-old corn snake and an adopted jungle carpet python. My current dream is to have my own house with a yard large enough to keep a small group of Nigerian dwarf goats and to work as a massage therapist. Until then, I am working on getting my massage certification, saving enough money to move out of my parents' house, and making zines whenever I can!

Philly Zine Fest--I'm going!!!

So my friend bailed on going to Philly Zine Fest with me and no one else will go. I found this out just now, at 10:00 in the morning on the day before. I thought I should feel some huge disappointment; I was going to miss this for the 5th year in a row.

And then I opened my mouth and let the question that was burning in the back of my throat fall out, there in my kitchen: "Mom, what would you do if I just went alone?"

"I'd be a little nervous," she said, "but if you want to drive into Philly a… Continue

24 Hour Zine Finished!

Well, I finished my 24 hour zine with 2 1/2 hours to spare. I worked from 10:00 last night to 9:00 this morning, slept till 1:00 this afternoon, and finished at about 7:30 tonight. I am EXHAUSTED! It think I drank between 6 and 10 cups of coffee in the last 24 hours.

I ended up writing a 24-page half-size zine that is simply called "24." It is a collection of 24 lists, each with a different topic and each with 24 items in it. They include "24 Things I Can See from Where I'm Sitting," "24 Facts… Continue

My 24 hour zine happens tonight!

I've healed enough from my tonsil surgery so that I can drink hot coffee again and I'm also not so tired and nauseous all the time, so I've decided to give The 24 Hour Zine Thing a try after all! I'd really been hoping to do it for the first time this year, but I was afraid I'd be too sick...so glad that I'm not!

I'm starting offically at 10:00 tonight, so 17 minutes from now! We ordered pizza at my house and I have to clean up a bit tonight, so I won't be spending 100% of the next 24 hours act… Continue

A hell of a week

It's been 8 days now since I had my tonsils removed. In those eight days, I was in the emergency room twice, once for dehydration, which resulted in a migraine and vomiting, and the second time for my throat bleeding. I've been bleeding from my throat on and off. It's really annoying. I just needed to vent and say that I'm sorry if you haven't gotten your trades and I still have a million zines to read and zinesters to write to. I will get to it. I'm just exhausted right now, not to mention I ha… Continue

Just a note about the next three weeks...

I just want to let everyone know that I'm having my tonsils and adenoids out next Thursday, so I'm gonna be down for at least a few days and not doing much for awhile after that. I'm not even allowed to go back to school or work for two weeks after the surgery, so driving myself to the post office is also out. If I owe you a zine trade, you WILL get it, but it may be a little delayed! Thanks for your patience!

Hi, Mab. Sorry I didn't comment earlier on this... Love the issue of RatBrat you sent. It really got me to thinking about some things. It also inspired me to start writing again. Thanks.

I'm taking a two week trip in a few days to take my kidlet to see his grandparents, so hoefully I'll get your letter done than! Did you still want me to write you some ferret stuff?

I received your zines yesterday and starting reading them while sitting on a bench on the main street of my town, waiting for a friend. I really enjoyed what I read so far, as well as the letter you wrote. Planning to write you a real letter soon.
