Hi Laurathelorax, I'm sure you're right that I'm not understanding the intricacies and history with the 'person with a disability' language too. It's very political here - and there too of course - but very cultural too, which is where the main is...

also, I'm debating about making a disability zine...From working with people with disabilities extensively and myself having one, I'd really like to do something in regards to this. I think I'd like contributors, so once I get a more clearly defin...

@incurablehippie: I think you are also not understanding what we mean by "person first language." In the US at least, the most acceptable way to refer to "disabled people" as you have been stating is what you prefer, is actually "persons with disa...

@IncurableHippie: This is an interesting topic. I guess my response to what you wrote most recently would be that of course, we are all "disabled" by society, society involves compromise, we can't truly be our individual selves while in society. B...

I don't think you're getting what I'm saying. I am a person first, and I do not have disability. Society disables me. But don't worry, I don't know if you read the last two links I sent, but the medical model language seems common in the States an...

@IncurrableHippie & all other Disabled Zines and Zinesters: have you seen the 1995 film, WHEN BILLY BROKE HIS HEAD (& other tales of wonder)?

My zine might have lots of spelling errors and mistake in it, but I dont think of my zine as being disabled. Also I am not perfect, I have made and will continue to make a lot of mistakes and errors but I dont think of myself as disabled either. E...

This is a good post about the different terminologies. Basically, being a 'person with a disability' makes my difficulties, say, getting around into something wrong with ME, when it is in fact something wrong with the places which are not accessi...

@IncurrableHippie: Okay. Thanx for the information about the Social Model of Disability. I read the article, I dont see where it says anything about referring to people as "disabled people" as opposed to "people with disabilities". Personally, wit...

No, I am not my disability, that's the point. I have multiple impairments, but the disability is caused by the world around me. I am disabled by the society I live in, not by my body and mind.

@IncurableHippie: so you "are" you disability? Is that what you mean to say? Why do you take issue with person-first language? @Bibliophile83: I think we should "allies" almost all people have some sort of disability anyway, or will at sometime i...

I am actually FOR changing the title to "Zinesters with Disabilities" but oppose adding the "allies" part. I like keeping this just between us disabled folk.

I oppose the motion. I am disabled, not a person with a disability. I subscribe to the social model of disability not the medical model. I'd be up for adding allies to the group, but not changing to 'with disabilities'.

About me

I'm Laura, I'm 26 and do youth work for a queer sexual health project and another project for young people with autism...

Just finished a zine named 'Briefcases' (which mentions self harm so don't trade if your triggery). 'Briefcases' is a true story with little illustrations written when I was in hospital for psychosis, it tells what was going on from my point of view...

I'm now working on a zine called 'The Mad Hatters Tea Trolley' which will be a mental health zine. Looking for submissions still so contact me if you have anything.

I spend my spare time knitting, spinning poi and reading..

If anyone wants to trade contact me on my wall or email me at spirals@live.co.uk

Hello Laura,
I'd be interested in contributing to 'The Mad Hatters Tea Trolley' . Is there a deadline and any specific theme? Cheers.

hey laura, i just read about The Mad Hatters Tea Trolley on the mental health zines discussion board and i think it sounds awesome! i make a zine with similar goals (mental health and mental illness from a DIY perspective) called Against the Flood. I'd love to trade any of my past issues for a copy of Briefcases, if you're interested.

be well!
