I'm going to the San Francisco Zine Fest--my first--and I'm wondering how many copies of each issue people usually bring.  I have three issues to trade/sell ($3), and I was thinking 30 copies of…Continue

BIO

Hi, I'm Kari.  My humor + random zine, which I started in 1995, is called Shards Of Glass In Your Eye! The first two issues were slap-dash one-nighters thrown together in fits of creative frustration. Each issue was a collection of absolutely nothing of consequence.  Resurrected in 2010, Issues 3-11 continue in that tradition.  You won't learn how to manage your money.  You won't be inspired to lose 20 pounds in 20 days.  You won't read the trenchant political analysis of a Capitol Hill insider, or be gripped by the harrowing story of a rock-climbing quadruple amputee.

But you will get a personalized psychic reading, and you'll find out what's not on the official Beverly Hills walking tour map.  Grammar Nazis got you down?  I've written a lecture to them on your behalf. Sing along with me to The Domestically-Challenged Blues. Take a psychological quiz. Learn one simple rule for dating a guy from a rock band. Plus, there's diets for the desperate, celebrity sightings, a series of fond reminiscenses, and a couple of serious ones (like "In Defense of Thin Women") too. You even get a word search puzzle. it's all in good fun, and I hope you enjoy it.

Ha ha ha  . . . Kari it was awesome!  As is the new Shards!  I made all the women wear dresses or they couldn't come, and not to be sexist all the dudes had to be in ties at least . . . a suit preferably.  God it's pathetic in this day and age that few dudes have stylin' ties and/or suits.  I looked as good as a Jamaican Rude Boy from 1966. Cocktails were served and I insisted on doing all the reading. No nerds showed up as was evident that we all pretty much failed the "word nerd" game. I think I'm the least of the nerds because everyone knew the kobe Bryant one except I thought he played for the Chicago Bulls. My favorite piece was "women on a stick."  Everyone agreed the best line was "The chubby little prairie ddog dies a thousand internal deaths, takes the fabric, an galumphs back to her den, vowing she will never leave again."

I got shouted down once when I went on a rant that Sheryl Crow was an evil harpy.

Other than that, the liquor cost was astronomical . . . but no one got sick . . . and most of the hour durvs (hell, I don't know how to spell that one!) were pretty good.

Sending you love from my room where I will be hiding until all this goddamned football hype is over!

P.S. I said "kike their ass" . . . with as much trouble I get in with people calling me a racist,  I need to make sure that you know I mean "kick" their ass.

Kari!  The Shards party is gonna be Friday!  It better be a good one because I ain't read it yet, and here I'm gonna read it out loud! ha ha .  . . but Jessie got all excited about it.  We're gonna have it at her place and it's gonIna have killer cocktails!  Including Absinthe!  And that shit cost a hundred bucks a bottle!  This Shards better be good! ha ha ha . . .   I know you like techno . . . but Jessie is a jazz buff  . . . so I think it's gonna be more mingus and coltraine than anything else as I read.  But hey, I'm a tough guy . . . anybody boo's ya . . . I'll kike their ass.   I'll write you all about it!  Unforunaetly you'll have to wait to Monday as Jessie has no internet . . . ha ha ha . . .

No!  Everyone coming has read Shards before . . . so it should be a good scene . . . but . . . well . . . if it turns in to a riot  . . . like when they performed Sravinsky's "Rights of Spring" for the first time . . . .well . . . you are paying the damages!

Sending Love, Fishspit out!

Hi Kari! Thanks so much for your words!  They mean a lot to me!  I just got the new Shards in the mail today!  I'm heading over tomorrow to my gal's place and will read it while we are having our "bed in against the superbowl."  When I get back I'll tell you all about what I think of your Shards! ha ha . . . Yup . . . I don't think much of football, but this city is in the super bowl and people are acting really stupid.  I'm too scared to protest out in front of the stadium (those people are dangerous) so I'm protesting from bed.  Remember how back in the hippy days john lennon and yoko had their "bed in for peace?"  Well me and Jessie are having a bed in against the superbowl.  But we decided to start tomorrow.  Jessie just got laid off too . . . so we are gonna stay in bed for a week protesting, drinking, and having people over.  She don't have a computer or a television so we'll be out of touch with the world.  I kind of wish she had a t.v. so we could watch the puppy bowl.  My favorite part is the kitten half time show.  I saw the Madonna half time show a couple years ago and that was pretty wild . . . but hey!  the kittens give her a run for her money.  I actually did something pro-woman Kari!  I kept seeing these shirts and signs and flags up here that would say "12" or "12 Man!"  I finally asked Jessie, "What the hell does that mean anyway?!"  I guess in football they allow 11 men on the field . . . up here they are calling the crowd the 12th man.  So I made a sign for Jessie's window that says, "What about the 12th woman!"

Any way, I'll write you soon . . .

Thanks again,

Joe.

Hey Kari!  Wiseblood #60 is done.  I just got to get to the copy shop.  I stand by the mail box every day waiting for my Shards!  When a fella (me) is down in the dumps, well . . . Shards is the best remedy.  I have received hundreds of zines over the years . . . and I have never read one as witty and funny.

Ha ha ha. . . . you said, "I walk" in your e-mail.  Yeah, I'd walk too if I hit as many cars as you have . . . ha ha ha . . .

Even if you win the lottery and brought all your pals down, you wouldn't be able to see me, well . . . maybe if you could get some incredibly powerful benzodiazipines.

OK . . . A Shards is coming!  I have a feeling it'll get here today . . . I better get out there and wait by the post box.

Ah hell Kari!  I just lost my job because I'm a budget cut.  I'd put a bullet in my head I'm so tired of the ridiculousness of it . . . but I get happy to know that you is in the world and Shards is in the world and that kind of thing keeps me going.  I'd like to come down there and visit you . . . but you know what Kari, I have a fear of travel!  It's the damnedest thing.  Once I get e about  5 miles out of town I have a panic attack and have to turn around.  So you keep me informed on what is going on down there in that crazy town and I won't feel so sad I can't visit it.

I send you love,

Fishspit.
