It really depends where your community is at in regards to 1) being aware of zines 2) creating zines locally. sometimes feeling out how engaged people want to be or how to best engage them is the hardest part and a lot of efforts can feel like the...

There's been some interesting research lately on the mental process of "finding". It's what motivates cats to walk laps around the house looking for other cats. It's what motivates squirrels to dig around in the ground. And it's been postulated th...

has there been a lack of plagiarism in zines? but i say, touche! but it's also about how you package your plagairism. led zeppelin did it well. crimethinc did it tastefully. many cometbus ripoffs do not. take not.

This is pretty embarrassing, but every zine I've ever made has had a ridiculous and long title for the sole purpose of entertaining me that someone else would have to type that out and print it when it got reviewed. no joke. it gets even better be...

There's lots more about zines from academia in Stephen Duncombe's Notes from the Underground. It's a bit dated as it was originally completed over ten years ago, but it was strangely the first widespread study of such behavior and its relationship...

Don't get beaten down by the peanut gallery here. It's mostly harmless. Just do your thing and ignore the negativity. It's displaced creative people. They become critics when they aren't cranking out gems. But it is a bummer that this stuff seem...

Early issues of Cometbus (bear in mind Aaron was 13 years old) were done with Jesse from Operation Ivy and were about the local punk scene in Berkeley, but not in the way that he does zines now when he covers the "scene". It was literally like a b...

The Basic Shizzle

Is this where my bio goes?

Man, internet-networking is so complicated sometimes.

Let's start with the basics.

I cut the pockets out of these shorts this year because they were so worn that it was not reliable to put things in them. This created the unfortunate problem that at the (im)proper angle you could then see my underwear, so I put matching patches where the pocket holes were. They are affixed so that despite their seeming lack of functionality, I can still hook pens into my pockets. Then I trimmed the bottom of the shorts because they were so frayed and had been patched so many times that they were actually chafing my legs.

At this point I would estimate that I have sewn about 60 patches onto these pants and it's the sheer time commitment that I've already invested in them that prevents me from throwing them away.

In the video store the other day a newly-moved-to-town guy who looked to be about 19 said "did you make those shorts?" and I said no but I guess I did at this point. You would be hard pressed to find a spot on them that wasn't created by a patch that I've sewn on there.

What does this have to do with zines you may ask? Well, I'm glad that you did. I found them in a trashcan in Eugene, OR about 6 years ago. They are Abercrombie brand cargo shorts. At the time of retrieval, I was walking around with Alex who makes zines and shit. I wore them on the whole Cut & Paste zine tour in 2003. I've worn them to most all zine conventions in those last five years also, mostly due to the practicality that you can actually fit zines in cargo pockets. I would like to be able to say that I've loaned them to other zinesters in times of need, but that's not actually true. They require heavy maintanence like a Harley so if they aren't being worn they are often waiting to be washed or patched.

I think it's fair to say that these shorts have greatly aided my life in zine making, reading, and collecting. I will begin working on some charts and graphs to illustrate this point.

Oh yeah, and I should mention that I'm working on a bunch of new zines and shit.

Pants, Part 3

For Halloween this year, I put together one of the best costumes I've had in years.

You see, I mechanic on Saturdays at the Bloomington Bike Project. Somehow I am confused for somehow else on a near-daily basis. Really the only things we have in common are that we are appreoximately the same height and maybe have a similar profile. But somehow I am constantly confused for him.

So I asked what was different about our ways of dress and pretty much the unanimous response was that I wore crumbier… Continue

Waterloo, Ontario

I arrived in Waterloo about 4:30 PM -- about 18 hours early. I thought it would be a town small enough, dry enough, and warm enough to either meet the two punks who lived in town or sleep in the park. I was wrong on the both accounts. It drizzled all night, starting around the town that I turned in. I slept in the car for about 9 hours. My original plan (which would have worked just fine) was to drive the truck up and stay in it. It has a bed and toilet in it so that would have been simpler...bu… Continue

Adventures in Bloomington, Vol 1

Yesterday I was walking up Walnut Street with Dylan, who is 17 years old. He could practically be my son. A man was walking next to us and shouting with his head craned diagonally, looking over the street, faced away from us. It was not abundantly clear that he was talking to us until after we passed him. He shouted over and over about how we were obviously at least in our 30s and trying to pass as college students BECAUSE OF THE WAY THAT OUR PANTS WERE HIKED UP (and that we obviously weren't fo… Continue

hi there joe, we met at twin cities zinefest (cyndi). you gave me two zines, being i had knowledge of the prior issues, (t.p.m.t.s. #5 & b.b. ?), loved em' both. i was recently involved with the art trade at minnesota book arts, i was enticed when i came upon your zine. i really like the cover - all out microcosm n' all. glad you came around to the site. hope this finds you well. (i also wrote to you)

First of all, you know I'm way cooler than that person you mentioned. I love parties, drink heavily and hang out with reprehensible characters. In fact, your party palace doesn't hold a candle to the "meatspace" parties that I've attended that have involved automobiles filled with dynamite and dudes with sledgehammers. You know I answer emails - but sometimes take awhile with Gchats, mister.

That said, if we can somehow incorporate fireworks with zines, we could have our own awesome zine event. If we rock it in the casinos of Indiana, we could have our own yacht and you know you can afford a party boat. I'll bring the werks, you bring the zines.

Oh my gosh, I must have been vibing you. I just went to the post office to send off my usual mountain of mail and packages, and what was waiting for me but a hefty box of the Make a Zine books. Thank you! They look absolutely beautiful. You must be really proud of it. It was generous of you to send me a nice big stack of them too! I'm going to give one to my local library, one to my friend Roger who I mention in my essay, save one for the zine workshops I've been doing, etc. ... I'll be sure to share 'em around. Thanks again.
