I don't imagine there being very much out there, but maybe I'm wrong. Maybe in downtown Riverside? If you're ever in Long Beach, there's a really great coffee shop/ open mic thing going on there. It seems like there's an independent coffee shop on e…

It's a Grind in Murrieta used to hold some.. but I'm not sure if it's still open. I haven't lived in that area in over a year.. but it's worth looking into because a lot of the It's a Grinds I visited in the IE had some form of a mic night.

I created 'zines back in the early 90's. You sent your issue to Factsheet 5 for review and advertisement. Factsheet 5 was everywhere all over the world, and at the time a great networking device to get your work to others outside of the mainstream.…

I had never heard of zines when I got back from the Peace Corps in 1993. But my new boyfriend had been writing them since high school and had a whole shelf of them in his apartment. I read them. And I thought: I'm a writer. I could do this.

My dad made me. I stuck with it fifteen years later because I've really got nothing else going.

The medium really appealed to me as a writer and photographer. It was a way to combine my love of collage and writing and photography, a way for me to get my work and voice out, a way to get out my angst and I love making things with my hands.

i was enjoying a lot of drugs. the drive to create just comes with that territory, so i made my first zine. didn't realise at the time where my head was at, or what i needed to say. it became clear after making another couple of zines that i had so…

honestly, I've been doing this so long that I don't really remember what originally sparked me. I was 9 and weird, I guess? now... I just need a creative outlet. something where my voice is the only thing that matters, something that I can send all…

I used to write a school newspaper - with topics like "Jesus loves Ellen, Ellen Undecided About Feelings", "Bullying, the Answer to Everything" and the such. Oddly enough I didn't actually have the school's permission and eventually they told me if…

Success

Our first fundraiser was a success. We had a yard sale to raise for printing and hopefully for our first reading. It was hard work but it was worth it. I feel more motivated than ever with my first endeavor in self publishing. There is something liberating in knowing that our work will produce our desired results... that we do not have to censor or include voices that we feel do not go with our vision...there is no pause...no hesitation now...it is go go go...write...create...live

Who knows

Read an article in Poets and Writers about "guerilla publishing." There is some comfort in that simple act of rebellion-of forcing your words out there, of not waiting for the approval of some larger entity to tell you that you're voice is important enough to be published. Yet there is an inner struggle, a contradiction in what I want to do with my zine. Am I really that different from that entity in asking for submissions? Part of me says fuck yes and the other says hell no. Who am I to judge w… Continue

New in Town

Hola! I am new to the world of zines so I am learning as I go. The zine my friend Gaby and I are working on is called Ordinary. Art. Literature. Culture. The name says it all-we are looking to celebrate the ordinary, the everyday, the working class, the Spanish-only, the Spanglish, the housewife- everything that makes up our community. If anyone has tips or suggestions please send them our way.

This blog is part of Ordinary. Art. Literature. Culture. A Zine. The mission of Ordinary is to publish writers who have different voices in one place as a form of demonstration that no matter who you are, what you do, what kind of education you have if you are a writer you have a voice. Our mission is to bring creative writing, in particular poetry, to the community through the publication of the Zine, neighborhood poetry readings and other events that promote creativity and equality.
