"Everything is shit. But there are tiny things that make it worthwhile."

Yo! I edit 'The Sound of the Modern Lonely', a Teesside-based fanzine in the north east of England dedicated to music, class/gender politics, urban photography and general pop culture-related ranting. It began in 2006/7 and has chalked up four issues now, so that's roughly one a year! We sold about 50 of the last issue, which wasn't bad, but it's difficult covering costs -- especially with the colour cover.

The 'Modern Lonely' was inspired by a visit to Sheffield about seven years ago, where I stumbled across 'Go Sheffo', a zine about the city's culture, heritage and post-industrial landscape, including its music scene (past and present). I try to make sure we get plenty of that imagery in the Modern Lonely, as it appeals to people like me who think urban and industiral skylines are amazing in their own special way, especially at night.

So yeah, the zine tries to document the good stuff that happens around here (and beyond) and is fiercely feminist and libertarian socialist/anarchist in its politics. You can check out the zine's profile and blog at http://www.myspace.com/modernlonelyzine

As for me, I'm 26 and work for a charity in the north east of England. I enjoy ... :: reading :: writing :: listening to music :: taking photographs :: going to gigs :: watching the world :: staring at the sky :: exploring new places :: travelling on buses and trains :: sitting in the freezing cold watching Boro get beat :: other stuff...

D'you fancy doing a workshop? Or joining a round-table thingy?
At the very least you need to make sure we have copies of your zines available! (go on, do some reprints for me!)

Yes sorry for not sending thanks straight away - they're great zines and I was gonna ask if you wanted to come up for the thing on May 1st. They're exactly the kind of zines that give credit to a city and to a scene, and I don't think we have anything very similar 'round here right now - no band interviews, no one at gigs trying to flog zines or raising the presence of stuff. But then maybe I've just not been out enough!

Will talk soon (after work, blekh!)

Hi there,

Thanks a lot for saying nice things!
Just send me whatever you have available - and if I'm right in thinking you're gonna be in new york ahead of me, let me know what you recommend! I'm there for a week in february, (fingers crossed).

Hi D.B.
Can I get a copy of each of the zines you've got available? Happy to pay what you need if you tell me the preferred way.

Hiya, cheers for your order, and many apologies for being crap and slow. Nice to see you were inspired by a visit to Sheffield!! I live in Sheffield and really like it here. Mainly. Except in this weather!
xx
