In 2007 I took the reigns of Salt Lake City Public Library's zine collection that was started by Julie Bartel. That same year I built our online catalog http://altpress.slcpl.org in Drupal and began uploading the holdings of our collection to the internet for the first time.
SLCPL's zine collection is a circulating, non-archival, public library collection. We accept not only zines of all makes and models, but other small press and independently published materials including artist newsletters, small non-profit literature, and independently produced books.
I feel a little disingenuous being in this community because I don't technically make zines. Instead, I collect and describe them. I believe strongly in the power of small scale, one-to-one communication to keep us human and I think the community of zines and all independent publishing is the best vehicle to encourage that interaction, without the filters and sterilization of mass-scale distribution.
My interests include reading (anything, really) and writing (essay and short fiction), cycle touring, cataloging, web development, database structures and user-friendly access, good beer and indian food.
