Philly Zine Fest table registration is now open at PhillyZineFest.com. Also if anyone is organizing another east-coast event and would like us to post or distro flyers for your event, get in touch. Likewise if you have an event before 9/20 and would like one of ours, let us know. thanks!

I'm here in Las vegas. I decided to run a workshop on zine making to try and get people interested and/or connect those of us who are here. DIY right! Ive found tons of useful resources and what not online, but any tips ne one has would be great! It's my first time and well, I'm nervous. There was a zine fest here a long time ago(10 years!) that happened in a space i used to rave at, it was soo rad and is the reason i found out about zine making :) Does any one remember this? Have a table there? Or know of any zines coming out of Vegas? Thanks! This lil online community is super and helpful after just a week! Inspiring !

Riding Sarah's coat tails, I'm working with the Brooklyn Lyceum to create the NYC Zine Fest-expected to be late June 2009. Stay tuned for more details!

Hey LouLou,

I just started doing zine events late last year and i've learned quickly that a handful of great speakers can make an event. Set up some chairs by the stage and people will fill them. Buy a cheap projector (and make out a fold out screen of some sort) so you can promise the speakers they can show little slide shows with their readings. It makes the event seriously better.

I come from the music organization world, and this is way different. Its more about the artists meeting each other that making fans. I feel more comfortable in this scene already. I've struggled to integrate live music into the events and i'm pretty convinced a mix mp3 track list through the PA is all you need before and after the readings. I used to go to poetry events and knowing how those work helps a lot.

I also found some great cardboard shelves behind a video store they were getting rid of. I set them up for the zine's to be displayed/sold/given away from. If they are being sold, the price should be clearly marked and normally people will wait until that person finishes reading to buy any works.

A catchy name helps (we are the Papercuts Club) and centering around other events helps (like our unOfficial Wondercon After Party). Available drinks and food on site help too, so bars, cafes, and bakeries are awesome!!

Candace, I'll probably have it in either a nightclub venue or large community hall space.. I have experience with organising all ages gigs and events for children, but this will be my first time running an event where i need to co-ordinate lots of different people doing different activities at the same time and not just bands.. also, how do i attract zinesters to come along and set up a table? What makes a zine fair/workshop successful/unsuccessful/exciting/boring? What are the differences between organising a DIY/zine fest and a regular gig?

hey loulou that looks really interesting- depending on where you have it, if it's in a public space/park you'll likely require a permit from whichever council you're holding it in (which you'll need to get a move on right away). But that's just off the top of my head as a main issue that comes up - what in particular did you need tips about?

I have just started organising my first zine related event.. a DIY festival of workshops, discussions, hopefully a zine/craft fair and some bands.. to be held in Melbourne, Australia.. could do with some tips from those that are more experienced! http://community.livejournal.com/diydiymydarling/
